Listening to music with lyrics and commercials in Portuguese will help your train your ear. If you want to incur the expense, Brazilian TV is available via satellite connection. If you find subtitled movies in Portuguese,watch and listen to them 2 or 3 times, because you will have a natural tendency to read the subtitles.This is an uncontrollable automatic response.The best free programming is on the internet. Listen in 15-minute intervals.Brazilian radio stations stream well using Windows Media Player and Real Player seems to work best for European Stations.
Cidade and Radio Amazonas both broadcast content appropriate for learning the language.If you want to do your own search you will find a lot of activity on the internet in Portuguese from Brazil. Just remember that international sites need the country abbreviation.
An excellent site for the not so faint of heart is Ciberdûvidas a page designed and written for speakers of Portguese. Grammar questions are submitted and then answered by experts.Quite often there are controversies between the Brazilians and Portuguese concerning correct usuage.Check the extensive archives listed by date and subject.

Once you really get ambitious read some classical poetry Versos de Segunda. Portuguese is the sixth most spoken language in the world today. It is the official language in 7 countries; Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Sâo Tomé and Príncipe islands. It is also spoken in the former colony of Macao, to a lesser extent. Although no longer the official language in Goa,India, Srilanka and Macao the names of places and some surnames in these countries are of Portuguese origen.

The ability to speak a language is directly related to the way you hear it. Because Portuguese cannot be learned by reading alone you should concentrate on the pronunciation, which by the way can be quite complicated. For me it was a question of breaking the code. Every language has it's own intricacies. And Portuguese is unique in its' abundance of phonemes. You should spend more time listening than reading. Although the alphabet is Roman the pronunciation can be very confusing for both English and Spanish speakers.
Listen to Brazilian music and Do it often! Try to find some classic Brazilian Samba. Joâo Gilberto, Caetano Veloso, Elis Regina, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Flora Purim are all well known artists. Very often the lyrics are included in Portuguese with an English translation. The poetic lyrics and rhythmic Afro-Brazilian beat make this task enjoyable as well as extremely useful. Often the original lyrics are included with an English translation.
