Lakshadweep BeachSome of the still-unexplored and beaches are located at Lakshadweep Islands, recognized as the only coral reef islands in the country. Lakshadweep is scattered around 4200 sq km of lagoon waters. Only 11 islands, among the total 36 islands, are inhabited. Head quarter of the islands is at Kavarathi. These islands and beaches are divided into the northern Amindivi group, the Laccadive group and isolated Minicoy in the south. There are multiple of opportunities for marine activities here. The most important thing is that the tourism activities are restricted little bit, while keeping in mind the ecological concerns. Only five islands (four to the domestic tourists and two for foreigners) are open for tourism activities. A special permission is required to visit these islands. The population is 93% Sunni Muslim and the main language is Malayalam. Fishing and coir production are the main economic activities. A caste system divides the islanders between Koya (land owners), Malmi (sailors) and Melachery (farmers). Attractions around Lakshadweep Beach Lakshadweep beaches offer many marine activities, along with the usual sunbath and surfing. Local fishermen provide sunrise and sun set cruises in fishing boats. There are two major diving centers in the islands, Bangaram and Katmat which conduct diving courses. Diving below 35 m is not allowed. Fortunately both of these are blessed with beautiful coral reef. As the majority of the locals are Muslims therefore most of the Muslim festivals including Muharam and Id-ul-Fither are usually celebrated here. Adventure Activities in Lakshadweep There are lots of islands of Lakshadweep which offer several adventure activities for local as well as foreign tourists. Some of the beautiful and well known islands of the region are Kavaratti, Kalpeni, Minicoy, Kadmat, Agatti and Bangaram. Kavaratti is the capital and the most developed island in Lakshadweep. These beautiful and calm lagoons offer water sports, swimming and snorkeling. Marine life enthusiasts can visit the marine aquarium. Marine Aquarium has an excellent collection of aquatic specimens. One can also enjoy watching the multicolored underwater life in the lagoons through glass-bottomed boats. One can also hire boats for Kayaking, wind surfing and sailing. The Dolphin Dive Centre is an attraction for scuba divers. Kayaks, sailing boats, pedal boats, skiing boats and glass-bottomed boats are available on hire. Best Time to Visit One can visit these beautiful beaches anytime but October to April is the best time to visit Lakshadweep beaches as you will find a friendly weather during the period. Where to Eat Some multi cuisine restaurants, club houses, bars, beach shack (seafood restaurant) and beach bars are there at Lakshadweep, where you can oblige your taste buds. Cochin International Airport, located 300 km away, is the nearest airport in the mainland. Indian Airlines operates daily flights (except on Sundays) to Agatti on a small plane. It takes around 40 minute from Cochin to cover the distance. Authorities from resorts transfer the guests into respective properties by boat and helicopter charging some little bit extra. |
