AUGUST/SEPTEMBER NEWS The retaliations between Israel and Palestine continue and seem to be taking on a whole new ferocity, as Ariel Sharon is being pushed farther into a corner regarding the Gaza Strip. He is also vehemently opposed in certain quarters of the world for his heavy handed use of military force. Israel defended this, however, on 9th August, pointing out that their targets are not civilian and very much regret the injury and deaths of innocent people. It is perhaps all too easy for those of who live in countries enjoying "Peace Time", and who have never lived through a war to judge and take sides. As a pacifist, I am naturally against war, however, at the same token, I recognise that countries must have some form of defense and Israel is no exception to this, although their measure has been rather extreme of late. At home (in the UK) we have seen troubles the streets of Bradford. Racist riots - this time...a long awaited retaliation, in kind. Problem UNsolved! This is the answer to every outburst of violence...no matter it's cause, however, legitimate. The original argument was lost in the mayhem where, again, innocent bystanders were hurt, businesses ruined in the city centre. Then there was another bomb let off in London - more of the same results as above. The "Real" IRA clambered for attention to receive the blame for this one but, of course, the "confession" was somewhat of a rumour as usual! It is deplorable that such individuals think that Governments will entertain listening to their arguments presented in such a style. Our Government, thankfully, is unmoveable when it comes to violence and, quite rightly, refuses to "reward" such thuggery by caving in to it, in any way. There is a continuing effort in North Ireland to get the Peace Process back on track.
