He contacts Marita Covarrubias who reluctantly gives him info on the nature of the deaths. A man named Aboah, who lacks a pituitary gland attacks another man and tries to stab his pituitary gland. Scully discovers that the victims had their pituitary glands (which produce melanin) virtually destroyed. Aboah escapes from a hospital and attacks Mulder, but Scully arrives in time and shoots him dead.

Melissa and Mulder discover that they are soulmates who will live out many lifetimes searching for each other. Scully discovers that she has had several past lives with Mulder also. Vernon Ephesian, the cult's leader, sets up a mass suicide as FBI sharpshooters stand ready to infiltrate the compound. His unsuccessful writing career is chronicled. Throughout this storytelling, the Cigarette-Smoking Man sets up a sniper rifle and listening devices. When Frohike finishes and steps out of his office, the Cigarette-Smoking Man almost pulls the trigger, but decides he can kill Frohike whenever he wants, just not now.
