Subject: Powell High achieves at National TSA Conference
Date: July 5, 2002

From June 24 through 28, 16 members of the Powell High School Technology Student Association (TSA) chapter competed against hundreds of teams at the 24th annual National Conference in Denver, Colorado. (Theme: “To Achieve and Succeed.”) There, the chapter continued its tradition of excellence in leadership, competitive achievements, and sportsmanship.

At the conference’s second general session, graduated senior Jennifer Cloud received TSA’s Distinguished Student Award, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a student member. By earning this recognition, Cloud brings unprecedented honor and prestige to her chapter and state.

Powell High TSA members were recognized as top-ten finalists in the following competitive events:

At the conference, Powell High TSA members also helped in Amy Groner’s campaign for the office of National TSA Vice President. Groner, a rising junior, tirelessly visited state delegation meetings for three nights to speak about her campaign platform, a TSA Growth Project that she developed. She ran against four excellent candidates and received enough votes to advance to the final election runoff. She was defeated by a candidate from South Carolina but was greatly enriched by the experience of being a contender for a National TSA office.

The chapter’s advisors at the conference were Mr. Brian Reagan, Mr. Jim Porter, and Ms. Tonya Vandergriff. At the awards ceremony, Vandergriff was recognized for her service and dedication as a National TSA advisor.

At the conference, all graduated seniors were invited to a reception where they were honored for their achievements and were given information regarding how to continue their participation in TSA as alumni members. Five Powell High TSA members are graduates of the class of 2002: Jess Bryan, Jennifer Cloud, Andrea Comiskey, Lauren Cox, and Weston Waggoner.

The next national TSA conference will be held in Orlando, Florida, and the Powell chapter is already anticipating another successful and enjoyable year of traveling, interacting with others, and learning.
