TSA POWELL TECH ED EVENT SOLUTION
|
Powell High TSA members, under the guidance of advisors Brian Reagan, Tonya Vandergriff, and Jim Porter, meet on Wednesday afternoons from 3:45 to 4:30. Special event practices are held nearly every week.
TSA members can compete in a wide variety of events on the local, state, and national levels. TSA is unique among other career and technical student organizations in the fact that, in most events, a student does not have to place at a conference in order to compete at the next level. The competitions cover the six main areas of technology: manufacturing, construction, communications, power and energy, transportation, and general technology. ___________________________
Powell High TSA had an excellent performance at the 2002 National TSA Conference. Sixteen students from Powell attended, along with ten students from Bearden, West, and Northwest MS who traveled with the chapter. All were supervised by advisors Brian Reagan, Jim Porter, and Tonya Vandergriff, and parent Sharon Winston. We returned with one trophy (for Jennifer Cloud-- Tech Bowl Written) and twenty top-ten finalist pins, the most in more than six years. Also at the conference, Jennifer Cloud earned the 2002 TSA Distinguished Student Award, an unprecedented honor that has been given only to national officers in the 24-year history of TSA. Mr. Brian Reagan, chapter advisor, made the presentation to Jennifer in the second General Session. Additionally, Junior Amy Groner ran an excellent campaign for National TSA Vice President; the former Virginia State President won the close election after three run-off votes. Finally, chapter advisor Tonya Vandergriff was recognized for serving as the National TSA Advisor. For a complete list of finalists from Tennessee, click here. All Nationals finalists are listed here.
______________________________________ 2002 State Conference February 24-27, Gatlinburg, TN. Powell High TSA had an excellent showing in attendance, competition, and leadership at the 24th Annual Tennessee TSA State Conference. The following trophy winners were recognized for competitive events:
_______________________________________ 2002 Regional Conference January 15, Farragut, TN. In January the chapter attended the East TN Regional Conference at the First Baptist Church of Concord. Everyone was pleased with the new location, which offered several rooms for events, a large gathering place for awards in the sanctuary, and plenty of room for chapters to have their own areas. The following trophy winners from Powell were recognized for their competitive events:
There have been several fundraisers this year in the Powell High School TSA chapter. The President of the chapter, Jennifer Cloud, entered the schools Homecoming competition. Her efforts and those of her TSA brothers and sisters helped earned money for both the chapter and Powell High. The chapter worked long and hard selling candy for the Homecoming fund, and it was worth it in the end. TSA also worked in partnership with the local fast food chain, Chick-Fil-A, in a mutually beneficial fundraising effort this fall. Chapter members handed out fliers advertising Chick-Fil-A and the restaurant recorded how much money was spent by customers with the fliers. The company gave ten cents on the dollar to the chapter. This effort stirred up business for Chick-Fil-A while stirring up money for TSA. Working hand-in-hand with the community has always been something the members of Powell High TSA have striven for. The chapter is now working on raising money with a Pie-in-the-Face contest. Powell TSA members are active in the Powell and Knoxville communities. Since the school year began, members have volunteered at retirement communities and for the Second Harvest Food Bank Fall Food Drive. The food drive this year was in memory of Vicki Dunaway, Powell High Principal, who passed away from cancer in June 2001 at the age of 52. All of the food that was raised-- almost 70,000 pounds of it-- was stored in the tech lab, and many tech ed students were in charge of moving the tons of it. In the spring of 2001 TSA members worked for the Playhouse Project for the National Kidney Foundation. We are currently working on plans to build another playhouse to benefit the charity. One of the favorite community service activities in the chapter is to run a booth for the annual Powell Halloween Carnival, which is held at the high school the day before Halloween. This year the chapter turned the technology lab into a haunted house with freak shows, ghosts, and plenty of blood, guts, and scares for the visiting children. Everyone dressed up in costumes and had a great time. Though it took many hours of scene preparation and acting, the members efforts were rewarded with the screams of small children -- and even some high schoolers. All money raised went to the school's Project Graduation, a drug-free event for this year's seniors.
Favorite social activities for the chapter include bowling, movie nights, camping, and ice skating. |
