"Home of the Powell Panthers"

Mr. Brian Reagan and
Mrs. Tonya Vandergriff-Williams are the TSA chapter advisors and tech ed teachers at
Powell High School. Mr. Reagan has been teaching at Powell since 1997. Ms. Vandergriff has
been in the classroom since 1998. She serves as the National TSA advisor, and was the
1992-1993 National TSA President.
Powell High Tech Ed
Classes
All classes are
taught in the Powell High Technology Center, which contains about 20 technological
modules, a TV studio and control room, TSA work areas, and a materials production lab. The
tech lab was completed in 1997 after being converted from a wood shop.
Television Technology
Mr.Reagan
teaches the Television Production ("TV Tech") class, which is a Diversified
Technology class with emphasis on communications, video production, and speech. The class began in Fall 1998 as an
opportunity for students to learn about writing, editing, presenting, and producing
television programs. The first class had 15 people, a number which has remained about the
same for the past three years. TV Tech students produce "The Morning Voice,"
which features the school's daily announcements. The class has its own studio and sets,
which were sponsored in part by Knoxville's WBIR-TV Channel 10. Students also create their
own commercials and short films; many of the films feature the class mascot "Lobby
the Lobster." One special short film was entitled "Safety Practices in the
Technology Lab," which was an educational, entertaining parody of safety rules that
taught viewers to be aware of their surroundings and not to play with saws, among other
things. |
Inventions and
Innovations
This year, technology
education classrooms across the state of Tennessee are offering a new class, called
Inventions and Innovations. The curriculum of this
course is based on the previous Materials and Processes class. Curriculum includes basic
drafting, material specifications, and manufacturing processes. The students also work in
the wood shop. Earlier this year the students built rockets, balsa wood bridges, and CO2
dragsters. |
Diversified Tech
Diversified
Technology I and II teach students about a wide range of technological subjects. Areas
include communication, electricity, manufacturing, transportation, and construction.
The most recent project of the Div Tech
classes was to construct a playhouse for a National Kidney Foundation fundraiser. Click here for details about the NKF Playhouse Project.
Students can also complete the following modules:
Basic Electricity, Biomedical Technology, Computer
Applications, Computer Aided Drafting, Construction, Desktop Publishing, Digital
Photography, Digital Sound Technology, Electronic Communications, Electronics Technology,
Hydraulics, Mechanisms, Multimedia Presentation, Research and Design, Robotics, Video
Production, Writing and Research.
In class, the Diversified Tech students have been
building airplanes and have done various problem solving activities. |
In
addition to learning about mass communications, production, and technology, the TSA
members who are in these classes are able to practice their competitive events. These
events include Promotional Communications, Tech Bowl, Construction Systems, and Research
and Design. |
