Trips
Apart from trips organized by IAESTE there are some nice destinations in Tunisia that you can visit on your own. Distances are not far in Tunisia, but expect public transport to be a lot slower than what you're used to from home. Best transports are trains and louages. Trains have fix timetables, air conditioning and seat reservation in 1st class, while louages leave when they're full (5 or 8 passengers, normally you leave in less than 10 minutes) and they're faster (when they slow down, either you arrived or there's a police control).
El Haouaria |
In the north of Cap Bon. Great beach, great rocky coast, great roman caves, known for its festival of falcons in june.
Sidi Bou Said |
Fine architecture: white houses with blue doors and windows, nice cafés.
La Marsa |
Said to have the best beach around Tunis.
Ain Draham |
Hills and forests of cork (?) trees.
Sousse |
Most Tunisians' preferred city, fine medina with ribat, good beach, lots of tourists.
El Jem |
Great amphitheatre, great mosaics.
Tabarka |
Has a nice castle, which is unfortunately still occupied by the
military. On one side of it there is a fine beach and the famous
standing rocks, on the other a wild coastline where the local people
take a swim.
Mahdia |
Great beaches with crystal clear water, even some fishes
to watch. The town is very relaxed, not many activities except for the
local kids playing soccer near the graveyard with tombs in blinding
white. Stay for a night in the cheap and clean Hôtel la Medina.
Djebel Riças |
Nice mountain to climb around a bit in the south of Tunis (Mornag), a bit difficult to get there without own transport.
