Directional Drilling
The technique of directional drilling begins
with the boring of a small diameter pilot hole to the design
profile, incorporating monitoring and adjustment of the
alignment as the bore is advanced. The head assembly contains
instrumentation which transmit the magnetic bearing of the
drilling direction, the angle of the inclination of the drilling
and the established position. Adjustment of the small offset
section of the head assembly known as the "bent" allows steering
corrections throughout the bore.
The pilot hole is enlarged by reaming in stages as required
until the final diameter is achieved. The final pipeline or
casing is then pulled through the hole into position. This
method has been designed for long crossings of pressure pipes or
cables ina curved profile beneath rivers or similar sized
obstructions.
In the late 1980's, early 1990's the
management team of Becfield Construction Ltd. became more
and more interested in this new and innovative way of earth
boring. Even rock boring now falls within the capability of
modern, high powered equipment. From watching and learning how
others utilized this equipment it was not long before we
purchased our first machine, an early vintage model D-7 Vermeer.
In relatively quick successions we acquired several other
Vermeer models as they became available. Presently our fleet
consists of a full range of Vermeer models. The D6 model Vermeer
is our smallest machine and the D-50X100 Vermeer is our largest
model. With this range of equipment we have successfully
completed bores from 50 mm (2") diameter, to 600mm (24")
diameter. The length of the bore varies depending on the size of
the equipment selected, soil type and size of product being
installed.
Along with keeping our fleet of equipment up to date we devote
time to operator training. We believe our skilled people and
quality equipment have resulted in a very positive response from
our customers. This has resulted in the completion of many
projects in a safe and efficient manner.
Our company is known for accepting difficult challenges and the
ability to deliver. We believe the reputation we have earned
will serve us very well in the future.
Exposure to waste management and remediation started gradually
by attending seminars, exhibitions and shows dealing with this
complex matter. We feel we are in a very good position to
further develop our expertise in this area and to accept the
challenges facing this sector of the industry.
We believe the Becfield Construction Ltd. team can be an
asset to Engineering Teams involved in the installation and
maintenance of waste management systems.
