Group F (F-Cup)

What is Group F?

Cars of group F are those, which international classification has been ended. Group F is driven only in Finland. Although is last oppotunity for old war-horses, it is not the childrens play. Or is the naturally aspirated 1600cc 220 hp/850 kg Corolla AE86 what is flying sideways between the trees a moped to you? The rules of Gr.F will allow almost anything but the turbo and four-wheel drive. We have seen in a Gr.F for example Ford Sierra Cosworth (the 2WD-model), which turbo was somewhere else but in the cars engine room.. The most popular cars in Gr.F are older than the ones we have seen in an international rallies; Ford Escort, Toyota Starlet, Toyota Corolla, Opel Ascona, Opel Manta, Volvo 240 (this bulletproof tractor goes surprisingly fast on the gravel roads) and Lada VFTS, for example. Very generous rules of class F, allow drivers/team/car-builder to upgrade cars technically to the modern level. This is the most popular rally-class; There is more entrants in rally than in classes A or N!! Also the spectators like those tail-happy sideways going crazy drivers in their real car-looking machines. Gr.F cars are participating in the same national championships among the newer hardware (ie. Gr.A's & N's 4WD turbo-cars).

AE86 Gr.F

Typical Toyota Corolla in Gr.F has 1600cc 16V 4A-GE with about little over 300 degree cams, aftermarket throttlebody and computer with direct ignition/ 45 carburettors. Exhaust pipes and 4-2-1 headers are usually made by finnish Martelius-Exhaust. Martelius-Exhaust has one custom exhaust-pipe that is especially designed in co-operation with finnish SM-Racing for needs of Gr.F Corollas. Compression ratio is about 11,5:1, pistons are usually forged. Head is ported, of course and intake valves are changed to a larger versions with the 30,5 mm head diameter. Tranny is sometimes T-50 with guts that TRD designed and produced for Gr.A cars (marginal), or Quaifes. Brakes are usually AP-Lockheeds racing models. Four-spotted in the front, two-spotted are installed for the rear. Handbrake is standard with the fly-off -function or the hydraulic. Suspension is fully adjustable, usually made up from products of Bilstein , TRD and with some parts of car-builders own production. Almost everytime there is racing four-link installed. Wheels are 14" on gravel and 15" on asphalt. Rear axle is usually the AE86's with TRD's LSD or one that is adapted from Volvo. Ratio is usually 5.375-5.8:1.

4A-GE Gr.F

Above is typical Gr.F 4A-GE of Kirena Racing Team's Corolla. Maximum output 203hp@8140 rpm. Torque 191,5 Nm@6550 rpm. Direct ignition, programmable Hestec injection. Cars weighs 880 kg. Top speed is 185 km/h and 0-100 km/h takes 5,6 seconds. Driver is Antti Peltonen and co-driver is Petri Laakso. These two pictures of Kirena Racing teams Corolla AE86 are taken from the Finnish RPM Net Magazine.
