Toyota MR-S (ZZW30) (1999.10-)

Toyota MR-S

Red sportscar . Toyota MR-S 1999,mid-engine and rear-wheel drive. The best the man can get, if 4WD turbos doesn't count..

The new MR-Spyder is the predecessor of the MR2, even though it is smaller and (luckily) lighter (975 kg), but less powerful than older SW20. Previous MR2 was available also in a turbocharged form among the n/a model. Old SW20 was available in the Japan with the turbocharged Celica All-Tracs 260 hp 3S-GTE -engine. Positively the new MR-S is still in RWD-format - that is the thing what is not self-evident feature for the sportscar in these days.. The engine of a MR-Spyder is small and light too, mostly due it's new aluminium cylinder block. Engine is (1ZZ-FE) same as is in the new Celica, the not-so-powerful option. Hp rating is just 140 hp, but quite good amount when we're talking about 1800cc engine. There is more MR-S technical information on Teg's website.

1ZZ-FE-engine, ~140 hp

Toyotan MR-S's underpowered engine is good for FWD-Corolla, but too lazy for MR-S, what is supposed to be a sportscar.

You can replace the 1ZZ-FE engine with the stronger 180hp 2ZZ-GE -engine, which is available as a most powerful engine choice of the new Celica. It produces 100hp/litre, which is good rating for any naturally aspirated engine. Both of the engines of the ZZ-serie are equipped with the VVTL-i system, what alters the timing and lift of the cams. TRD is developing a supercharger kit for the weaker engine at the moment.

2ZZ-GE-engine, ~180 hp

That is 2ZZ-GE with the aluminium block and 180 hp.

Non-standard MR-S

Turbo MR-S

Even though TRD can't offer many performance upgrades for the MR-S, somebody has developed a turbo-kit for it. Or is that a supercharger kit?

Toyota Celica (ZZE231) (1999.9-) 2ZZ-GE

The new Celica

The new Celica. It is neat, but wouldn't it be better with 17" wheels and with more aggressive spoilers..

This new (only with FWD) Celica is available only with the 140 hp aluminium-block -engine called 1ZZ-FE in the Finland, but in the countries where car-taxes are rated in the reasonabe way, you can choose also the 180 hp 2ZZ-GE. That engine has aluminium block too. Both of the engines are equipped with 6-speed manual. The stronger engine has 40 additional horses more over the 1ZZ-FE, mostly because of higher compression ratio 11,5:1 as well as since it has the different camshafts. The looks of new Celica is aggressive - somebody likes, somebody don't. There is not many different models of that new Celica. Personally i would like to see 4WD turbo model, which has been available for almost 15 years.

Toyota Altezza (SXE10) (1998.10-)

ALTEZZA

Japanese BMW is available with 210 hp(automatic) or 220 hp version (6-v. manual). Oh yes, there is 160 hp 6-cylinder too. I almost forgot..

The new RWD Altezzaa, which is Lexus IS200 in markets of Finland (and equipped naturally with that #*@/* 160 hp 6-cylinder engine) could be purchased in Japan with 220 hp 3S-GE DUAL VVT-i engine and with 6-speed tranny. That particular model is called Altezza RS200.

If engine could be beautiful, this would be the one!! 3S-GE VVT-i.

Finally Toyota constructs RWD cars again. This is good donor car for my Corolla KE70 -220 hv 3S-GTE VVT-i with 6-speed gearbox. It would be quite unusual.

Toyota Caldina (SXE10) (1997.12-)

Caldina GT-T 4WD Turbo

This is Caldina 4WD GT-T competitor of Subaru's fast station wagon.

Cardina GT-T's engine and powertrain is mostly taken from ST205 Celica, as a 260 hp version. You can have a Caldina with previously featured 3S-GE, too. This model is called Carina in the Europe, or just Caldina (In Italy, for example, but engine is 2000 cc Diesel) but no turbo-versions have been officially exported here.
