Every year since 1992, members of
the society would participate in what would amount to about 4 days
of very hard but rewarding work to buy, prepare and cook the vegetarian
food for the annual fundraising vegetarian food fair during Buddhism
Awareness Week. This is perhaps the most arduous of the
tasks required during Buddhism Awareness Week but it gives everyone
involved the most satisfaction not only because we're doing it for
a good cause but also because of the display of unselfish cooperation
and team work by everyone. All proceeds of the food fair are donated
to a chosen charity which have included among many others, the Red
Cross and World Vision. In 7 years, the society has raised well
in excess of 4000 dollars for charity.
Unfortunately and regrettably, because of the lack of time and
resources the vegetarian food fair was not organised for 2000. It
is also highly possible that we will no longer have the vegetarian
food fair as a fund-raiser because of food health-and-safety factors.
We will instead conduct some other types of fund-raiser activities.
This year, we hope to expand our activities to include welfare
activities such as spending some time in helping the elderly in
nursing homes, the homeless, helping students in crises, etc.
