Circumstance

• Mr Phan graduated from Hue University of Education in 1990. He returned to teach at Tan Lam High School in Cam Lo district, Quang Tri province, Vietnam. Cam Lo is one of the poorest places of Vietnam.
• His father died in 1982. In 1995, his mother also passed away. He is now still single and living alone in his parent's house at Cam Lo (above picture).
• He has been having disease of chronic renal failure in June 1998. He has been having a hemodialyses since December 2000. From that time, his health has been decreasing seriously. And now he is in the end-stage kidney disease. His doctors have judged that it was difficult to maintain his life for more than 2 years. There is one possible way to help him is to do a renal transplantation.
• Since 2000, under supporting from Belgium doctors, there has been a limited number of cases of renal transplantation at Hue Center Hospital without of service charge. At the moment, Phan's older brother has agreed to give one kidney for renal transplantation. The Hue Center Hospital has decided to operate for renal transplantation for Phan as the last case of this free of service charge series. The operation is planed in the end of 2002.
• The fact that, the cost of medicine and concerning expense are too hight for his circumstance. Medicine is not only needed during and after the operation but also for the prevention of graft rejection in several year continuously. The cost is at least 10,000 USD. Besides his low salary (~40USD/month), he does not have any other income and support. At the moment, the renal transplantation is not covered by any health insurance system in Vietnam.
