This film is one of the only bizzare, rude, strange, low budget, gore films that I have enjoyed. Basicly, it was a combination of the Exorcist and the grotesque violent slashers films of the 1980's with a lot of gore. The plot is basic: a bunch of teenagers lost in the woods summon ancient demons and one by one are possessed by these demons and kill the others off, a sort of Invasion the Body Snatchers plot where people are turned into monsters, only differance is, these monsters don't look human.
Before Sam Raimi made this film, he created a super low budget film while in college. The film was called "Within the Woods" and was based on a project Raimi had done on the Necronomicon, the horrific book that is said to raise ancient Sumerian demons is read aloud. From that film, Raimi created Evil Dead, with a few of his friends, including Bruce Cambell, on an extremely low budget. Evil Dead was basicly a gory verson of the Blair Witch Project, with everything from supernatural trees to the Necronomicon to these demons.
Immediately, Raimi followed it up with two sequels and it is rumored that one more is in the mix. But, the two sequels that have been made were senseless and stupid comedies. Basicly, they looked like a 2 hour long America's Funniest Home Video tape, with supernatural blood thirsty demons. Ok, I admit, that some of this stuff was funny, but the majority of it wasn't. Now then, why did they make one great fright film and then feel that they needed to make the sequels comedies? Any how, don't be fooled by the sequels: Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn, and Army of Darkness. They were sad films, with no reason being in a horror series.
