Dear Parent,

Joining a fraternity is one of the biggest decisions that a university student can make. Undoubtedly you have questions about the decision that your son is about to make. Many of the parents that I have spoken to have expressed concern about several issues such as hazing or alcohol and I would like to take this opportunity to answer some of the questions that you might have.

One of the major benefits that I believe Lambda Chi Alpha can offer a new member is the fact that we do not have “pledges”. Lambda Chi Alpha was the first international fraternity to move away from pledges towards an Associate Member program. Associate Members have all of the rights and responsibilities that the active members have from day one. This is not something that other fraternities can offer you or your son.

On the issue of hazing I cannot honestly tell you that no fraternity hazes. What I can tell you is that Lambda Chi Alpha is a NO HAZING fraternity. This policy is especially true at the University of Alberta. Practices that other fraternities consider to be standard we consider to be hazing. For example, other fraternities believe that it is a good idea to force their new members to scrub the fraternity house or go to mandatory study halls when the active members do not have to. We believe that any practice where an Associate Member is treated any different than an active member is hazing. I personally guarantee that no Associate Member of my chapter will EVER be hazed mentally, emotionally, or physically.

Many of the parents that I have spoken to have expressed a strong concern about the possibility that their son might be forced to drink alcohol. This is an issue that I feel very strongly about. Several of the members in my chapter do not drink and no member of my chapter is ever forced to drink. In addition to my personal view on alcohol our chapter holds alcohol awareness events in conjunction with the university. To my knowledge we are the only fraternity that has done this since I have been at the University of Alberta.

I hope that I have at least begun to answer some of the questions that you have about our chapter at the University of Alberta. It is my sincere belief that if your son decided to join Lambda Chi Alpha he will not be disappointed. If there is any way in which I could be of additional assistance to you please do no hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Tristan Power
