What is Rush?

The term “Rush” means the time at the beginning of each semester when men's and women's fraternities actively recruit new members. This is a very exciting time on campus and an excellent opportunity to experience a lot of activities in a short period of time. Each Greek organization has many events that are free and offer participants the chance to learn about Greek life, meet other new students, as well as have a lot of fun! Events often include football games, barbeques, amusement parks, movies, house tours, and more. Even if you have never considered joining a fraternity, don’t miss out on the great experience of Rush.

Although we think Lambda Chi is the only choice, we suggest you check out all the fraternities where you can get a feel for the chapter, meet the members and find the place where you feel most comfortable. During the registration process, you’ll have the opportunity to select the different fraternity events you wish to participate in.

Here are some common rush questions:

How do I find out about Rush events?
All the Greek organizations will have booths in the Butterdome and in Quad where you can meet a few of the members and learn about the activities.

There are so many choices, how do I decide?
Don’t worry about deciding, just spend some time with each house, meet a lot of great people, and enjoy the fun. Not every house is a good match for every person, but after you spend some time with the fraternities, you’ll know where you feel most at home.

Will there be drinking?
No! All the Greek organizations at the University of Alberta believe that the purpose of Rush is to learn about the houses, promote friendship, and make new students feel welcome. The fraternities at the University of Alberta have a strict policy prohibiting alcohol during Rush.

Does rush cost anything?
No! Rush is completely free. There is no cost to register and the fraternities pay for all the activities.

While there is a concentrated time at the start of each semester, Rush happens during the summer as well. You can find our Rush schedule on this website. If you have any questions, please send us an E-mail.
