SCOREBOARD - Intercollegiate competition: ECRHA Tournaments 1998-1999

  • March 6 & 7, 1999:
The University of Pennsylvania Roller Hockey Club travelled to the Susquehanna Sports Center in Harrisburg, PA for an ECRHA tournament. In this, their second ECRHA tournament of the season, the Quakers entered unofficially ranked 8th in the league.

    The scenario:
The 10 tournament teams were placed into two brackets, with the top two teams from each advancing to a semifinal round. The Quakers were placed with U Maryland, Penn State, U Pittsburgh, and Kent State University. The other bracket consisted of U Delaware, Rochester Institute of Technology, Shippensburg U, PSU Altoona, and Towson University.

    Roster:
With a larger, much improved roster for this tournament, the Quakers hoped to improve their ECRHA ranking. Schwarz, Kozlik, P Brennan, and "B" team player Dan King made their ECRHA debut, while defensemen Kim & Saunders, Captain B Brennan, Manager Lattanzio, and PCRHL star goaltender Gagliardi made their second appearance. Although team leading scorer Eddie Schwarz was suspended from the PCRHL, he was eligible to compete in this ECRHA tournament. Club President Dan Gabbay, who led the team in goals at the last ECRHA tournament, Nodelman, Sacks, Summers, and PCRHL star Nebelung were all unable to attend.

    Game 1:
In their first game, Penn rematched the 5th ranked University of Maryland, whose 10 skaters defeated a tired 5-Quaker bench by a score of 10-0 at the ECRHA tournament in Freestate, MD, back in November 1998. In this contest, four months later, the game was tightly played from the drop of the puck to final horn. Terps' Captain Ben Picker buried a breakaway from a misplay by Schwarz to put U Maryland up 1-0. Shorty thereafter, Schwarz redeemed himself on a feed from Tom "jamal, pass me the rock" Kozlik to tie the score. The game went back and forth for thirty minutes but Maryland scored a late goal to win by a score of 5-4.

    Game 2:
On Saturday evening, Penn rematched the 2nd ranked Penn State, who had defeated the Quakers by a score of 7-1 at Freestate in November. Early in the game, a Penn State player high-sticked Quaker Captain Brendan Brennan behind the play and sent him off with blood spilling from his nose, upper lip, and mouth. Brennan was cleaned up and bandaged quickly, and returned before the end of the period. Although shaken up, Brennan played solid defense, breaking up several 2-on-1's by high-scoring PSU Captain McBride. Soon after, Quaker Eddie Schwarz sent a message to the PSU team ("don't mess with my Captain and best friend Brendan") by inflicting what was by far the hardest hit of the tournament. The PSU player's helmet flew off as he was crushed into the boards, and he would fall to the floor 2 times before regaining his feet. The player was so shaken up that he put his helmet on backwards and slowly skated to the bench. The Quakers played Penn State tough, but failed to bury their offensive chances and fell by a final score of 4-0.

    Game 3:
On Sunday morning, Penn battled the University of Pittsburgh for the first time in club history. Penn took a 1-0 lead at the half, but Pitt tied it up in the second. The Quakers needed the win to advance to the playoffs, while Pitt could settle for a tie. With only a few minutes remaining, defenseman Brendan Brennan rushed the puck into the offensive zone and took a shot that bounced off a leg and right onto Tom Kozlik's stick for the go-ahead goal. On the ensuing faceoff, Pitt managed to gain a 3-on-1. B Brennan slid to cover the passing lane, so the Pitt player took a wristshot that slipped past goaltender Gagliardi. The Quakers pulled their goalie and put on a strong offensive drive in the last minute of regulation, but failed to put the rock in the hole and settled for a 2-2 tie.

    Game 4:
With the playoff run out of the picture, the Quakers played their final game with wounded hearts. They took on 10th ranked Kent State University, that was also eliminated from the playoffs, for their final game of the weekend. Two goals by Eddie "Jamal" Schwarz from Tom "Tyrone" "pass me the rock, Jamal" Kozlik proved to be the Quakers only scoring of the game, and Penn fell by a final score of 5-2.

    Summary:
The 8th ranked University of Pennsylvania Quakers put up a valiant effort at this 10-team ECRHA tournament but only tied Pitt and lost to 5th ranked Maryland, 2nd ranked PSU, and 10th ranked Kent State. The ECRHA debut of Quakers Schwarz and Kozlik proved successful, as they led team scoring at the tournament with 5 goals and 2 goals & 3 assists, respectively. The Quakers look forward to the next ECRHA tournament on March 27 & 28 in York, PA, and hope to have the 5 key "A team" players on the roster that they missed in Harrisburg due to Spring Break. Penn State defeated Pitt in the semifinals and won the tournament by a score of 3-2 over RIT, who had defeated U Delaware in the semi's to take their shot at PSU.

  • November 7,8 1998- Freestate Indoor Sports Complex
    Collegiate Tournament
Results: 4 of our skaters decided they couldn't attend the tournament and we were unable to find replacements in time. Thanks to the dedication of players Dan Gabbay, Chris Gagliardi, Brendan Brennan, Fran Lattanzio, Lorence Kim, Drew Saunders, and Jason Mirvis, we were able to have at least 4 skaters for each game. We defeated James Madison U. by a score of 2-1. Dan Gabbay scored the first goal and setup Brendan Brennan for the game winning goal.
In our second game, we played iron man for the entire second half against penn state and lost 7-1. Dan Gabbay scored our lone tally on an unassisted effort. The highlight of the game was the opening faceoff with U Penn Captain Brendan Brennan going head to head with his Co-Chairman of the ECRHA and PSU Assistant Captain, Jonathan Huck.
Jason Mirvis drove down to replace Drew Saunders for the third game, but one fresh set of legs couldn't help us to keep up with U Maryland's bench of 11 skaters and we lost 10-0. We finished 7th out of 10 teams in the tournament. Penn State defeated U Delaware in shootouts to win the tournament. Congratulations to Jonathan Huck and his squad!
