League Game Recaps 1998-1999!
2/28/99: U Penn Varsity battled U Delaware tonight for the
third time this season in what would prove to be yet another tight game. In
this,
their final regular season game, the Quakers fell 1-0 in the first period
on a sweet goal by Blue Hen Matt Funston, one of the league leading
scorers. Quaker Dan Nebelung, also one of the top scorers in the league,
soon tied the score at 1 a piece,
and Brendan Brennan added another on a pass
from Nebelung to put the Quakers in the lead. Three unanswered
Blue Hen goals put the U Delaware squad back on top, before Nebelung
netted his second of the game to make the score 4-3 Delaware. Quaker Tom
Kozlik then shelfed a wristshot on a pass from Nebelung to tie the score
at 4 all, but Delaware scored on a 2 on 1 break to take the lead once
again with 5 minutes left in the game.
The game quickly
got physical as Quakers Tom Kozlik and
Brendan Brennan, who had drawn 3 penalties and received one of his own
for boarding, got mixed up in a scrap with some Blue Hens.
Kozlik suffered a deep cut on his chin in the altercation, and the guilty
Blue Hen player was
given a game misconduct and suspension. On the power play, the Quakers
pulled goaltender Gagliardi for an extra skater, but Delaware netted an
empty net goal from behind the red line to seal the win.
The match ended with Delaware winning by a final score of 6-4.
The Quakers now look to the playoffs on April 11 and will likely be
seeded 2nd or 3rd, with a record of 6 wins, 3 losses (all to U Delaware),
and 1 shootout loss/tie. They will be travelling to ECRHA tournaments
March
6/7 and 27/28 in Harrisburg and York, PA, respectively before then, and
also plan to host their own collegiate tournament on April 25, the second
annual Quaker Cup. The will have to compete in the playoffs without past
league leading scorer Eddie Schwarz who will still be serving a
suspension for fighting, but Schwarz will be eligible for tournaments.
Check back soon for these tournament results, PCRHL player stats (to be
posted soon), and U Penn JV game info.
2/22/99: U Penn Varsity defeated Temple last night, for the
third time this season, by a score of
7-1 to improve their record to 6 wins, 2 losses, and 1 shootout loss.
Solid defense from Sacks held the Owls to very few shots, and
Gagliardi proved once again that he is the top goalie in the league by
stopping all but one. Explosive offense from Eddie Schwarz, Brendan
Brennan, Fran Lattanzio, defenseman Drew Saunders, and Mark Nodelman put
the Owls away. Schwarz had 2 goals and 2 assists tonight to put him back
in the league scoring lead, ahead of "Crazy Legs" Nebelung who sat out
with a back injury suffered in a Latin Dance show. Brendan Brennan
scored 2 goals, and a goal and assist were earned by Lattanzio, Nodelman,
and Saunders. As with the previous two matches with Temple, the game got
very physical. After Brennan was boarded and a third Owl jumped into the
following confrontation, Schwarz protected his Captain and bloodied his
knuckles on the Owl's face. As a result, league leading scorer Schwarz
faces a suspension, a $50 fine, and possible ejection from the league.
The Quakers' final regular season game of the season is scheduled for
next Sunday at 5pm vs. U. Delaware.
U Penn JV gained revenge against Temple JV last night with a
10-2 win. Captain Jason Mirvis showcased his excellent hands once again
in the win. Last week, his squad was forced to forfeit against
the same team due to a
goalie violation (although the Quakers had been leading 7-1 in that game).
The JV squad is now in the running for the playoffs with a record of 4
wins, 4 losses.
2/8/99: In a doubleheader Sunday night, U Penn Varsity battled
Delaware and Temple. Penn took a 1-0 lead against Delaware with a sneaky
short-handed shot from the faceoff draw
by Mark Nodelman, but the Blue Hens countered with a few quick
goals. Senior
Nodelman then netted his second goal of the game on another unassisted
effort. Captain Brendan Brennan scored on a feed from Eddie Schwarz to make the
score 5-3, but late game penalties for boarding and roughing on Pat
Brennan and Eddie Schwarz thwarted the Quakers' chances of coming back to
tie the game.
Next, the Quakers JV squad jumped on to play a tough Drexel squad.
The Quakers rolled over Drexel 7-2 to improve their record to 3 wins, 2
losses. They play again on Sunday Feb. 14th at 6pm vs. Temple JV.
After an hour break, the Quakers Varsity squad took the rink again to
play Temple, sporting their new fancy jerseys. Temple jumped out to a
quick 2-0 lead, but the Quakers regrouped to defeat the Owls by a score
of 5-2. Dan "crazy legs" Nebelung tallied yet another hat trick to put
himself in sole position of the league scoring lead. Ed Schwarz, who had
held that title for previously, also scored a goal on a slapshot from the
circle. High scoring defenseman Drew Saunders also netted a goal on a
one-timer from the high slot.

The Quakers Varsity squad now stands with 5 wins, 2 losses, and 1
shootout loss (1 pt for shootout loss in standings). Both losses came to
a talented University of Delaware squad who remains undefeated through
their 5 league games. The Quakers' next game is Feb. 21 at 10pm vs.
Temple. Their final league game is scheduled for Feb. 28 at 5pm vs.
Delaware.
1/29/99: Congratulations to Quaker Varsity goaltender Chris
Gagliardi for posting his third shutout of the season! After a tough
shootout loss to
Drexel, we came back and defeated Temple University 10-0 and bring our
record to 4 wins, 2 losses. League leading
scorer Eddie Schwarz posted a hat trick, and rookie Fran Lattanzio netted
a few as well. The Quakers now look to a doubleheader against Delaware
and Temple on February 7.
1/26/99: Over winter break, Temple University added two
teams to the PCRHL, and the 11 league teams split into JV and Varsity.
On Sunday, our varsity team rematched a much improved Drexel U. varsity
squad. The first meeting found Penn coming out on top by a score of 5-1.
The rematch game was tied through regulation and a 5 minute overtime
period, so the game went to shootouts. The Quakers lost the shootout 3-1,
with the
lone Quaker goal coming from league point leader, #69, Eddie Schwarz. Dan
Nebelung and Brendan Brennan, 2nd and 4th in league scoring respectively,
were stoned on their shootout chances by a tough Drexel goalie, as was
newcomer Tom "Koz" Kozlik. The JV
squad's U Delaware opponents forfeited on Sunday, apparently too scared
to face Captain Jason Mirvis, who led the league in goals after the break.
12/9/98: Congratulations to Quakers "A" goaltender Chris Gagliardi
for his second straight shutout in a row! We ended our second straight
game on a "mercy" before the third period - this time defeating Beaver
College "B" team 19-0. That's it for the Quakers this fall... check
back in mid-January when we resume the season!
12/7/98: Congratulations to Quakers "A" goaltender Chris Gagliardi
for his first shutout of the season as the Ivy League boys defeated
Philly Textile 10-0 for their second win of the season. Also, congrats
to rookie Dan "crazy legs" Nebelund for scoring his first hat trick!
