Echoes from the Past
Summary: Shortly before his fifteenth birthday, Harry receives a letter from the past that alters his entire life. Now it is up to him to reveal the truth to the other whom it concerns. But will he find the courage to do so or will he repeat his mother's mistake and wait until it's too late?
Note: This story is a response to the Severitus challenge. If you don't know what that means, I would suggest that you don't find out until after you have read this story as it will spoil a major part of it. But, for those of you who want to know ahead of time, or who've already read the fic, the details of the challenge can be found here (outside link) and I would highly recommend the original story, by Severitus, A Father's Sin. Awards & Accolades: This story swept the first round at the Phoenix Feather Competition being voted the best fic in 6 of the 12 categories, namely best overall, best angst, best novel length, best romance, best AU, and best general. Since there are too many awards to show here, the awards have their own page here. This fic has also been a featured story at Potions and Snitches.
Timeline: Because this story was started before Order of the Phoenix came out, I am completely disregarding that book and any of the later ones. Although the fic started off as canon, it has become alternate universe since the publication of Order of the Phoenix. Please try to ignore anything we learned after Goblet of Fire came out as you read and it will make more sense as some of the facts no longer work with what we learned later (i.e., my Snape comes from a family as rich as the Malfoys but we now know him to have been poor).
Symbols: When an item is marked with a • it means that there is an author's note about it at the end of the chapter. Generally this will be used when I have a Latin word for a spell or motto, but it may be for other reasons as well. I shall also put all Parseltongue speech in *s in order to easily differentiate it from English.
Illustrations: A few artists have kindly done drawings for this story and I have added photos and photo manipulations wherever possible as well. All of this has been added to Art Gallery and listed below with the part of the fic that they illustrate. I have also created a banner for this fic.
Cookies: There are now several cookies (both fiction and art) for this fic. For those of you who aren't familiar with the term, a cookie is a fan fic or fan art piece based on a fic. Several people have either written or drawn potential future scenes for this story based upon what I've written so far. At the present these cookies are only available in the files section of the "Fire & Ice" mailing list.
