TEACHER'S DAY SPECIALS

Crayons for SchoolTeacher's Day is round the corner, and your child probably wants to get his favourite teacher a present. You should know that expensive gifts are a no-no. Stick to inexpensive, handmade presents and spice them up with a heartfelt message from your child. Here's a sampling of some teachers' faves;

  • handmade cookies. They make thoughtful and enjoyable gifts. Set aside one Sunday afternoon for Project Bake with your child - involve him in selecting the recipe, as well as the actual baking. That is one afternoon of wonderful sharing time with your child! Pack the cookies in tinted plastic wrap and tie up with bits of bright raffia or ribbon.
  • potted plants. Turn this into a mini-gardening project with your child. She can select a pretty little pot (Ikea and Tom and Stephanie have a good range), fill it with some good soil (available at nurseries and plant shops at wet markets) and plant chilli seeds. Chilli plants are pretty and grow quite well, but if your child is truly non-green fingered, then opt for the hardy money plant. (Money plants look nice in odd-shaped containers too - your child can easily grow a bottle garden.)There's enough time for the plant to grow a little before Teacher's Day.
  • cross-stitched bookmarks/tissue holders. Check out your neighbourhood shopping centre for a craft shop. You can get cross-stitch kits which even a seven year old can do with ease. Select kits according to your child's age and level of interest in cross-stitch craft.
  • handmade cards. Sit down with your child for an hour of craft activity. Supply him with coloured paper, glue sticks, scissors, stickers, glitter, crayons, felt pens…Your child can make a colourful collage, or a picture of Teacher, and add a personal poem. Tokens of appreciation like these are guaranteed teacher-pleasers!

Now: if the cookies turn out hard, if the plant wilts and dies, if the cross-stitching looks like something the dog threw up and if your toddler has doodled on Elder Sister's handmade card, fret not! Quickly go buy a clutch of red ballpens (Pilot is recommended), or a red, red rose, or yes, a nice big rosy apple. Your child has to write and stick on a label: To Teacher With Love. He should not forget to include his name! And there you have it - a lovely Teacher's Day gift.
