PROLOGUE

Evil? No, I didn't think that I was evil. Crazy? Insane? Those were all words to describe me, or at least what I had become. I won't claim that it wasn't my fault. What I did was my fault and it should never have happened. I knew that, so I knew I couldn't possibly be crazy. I was just insanely jealous.
But could anyone blame me? She was female perfection. And I couldn't understand why I couldn't be as well. I wasn't ugly. I was pretty. Maybe not the epitome of beauty, but it wasn't like I was horrible to look at.
Men and boys of all ages took notice of me before she came into my life. Of course I had known Rachael off and on. We were cousins. My father had been murdered, though I'd never been told who did it. I always assumed it was my mother. After finding Jessica, Gerald's first wife, in bed with my father, well, what woman wouldn't go insane and murder them both?
The worst part of it was that we really weren't stepsisters. Mother had told me that. We were poor, having found ourselves completely bankrupt, while my beautiful half-sister sat up on the hill in her giant house, her only problem fighting with the father she didn't know wasn't truly her own. Gee, some problems she had.
I guess it was a mix of everything that happened that drove me over the edge. I guess, mentally, I was much like my murderous mother, only years later for other reasons. Or maybe not other reasons, just a different circumstance. It didn't matter in the end, however. There was no excuse that would get me out of trouble. But to me, being sentenced to death wasn't truly a punishment. It was giving me freedom from living a life that held me captive in misery.
