Alex Todd is a Managing IT Security and Trust Consultant, formerly with IBM Global Services in Canada.  Mr. Todd graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto in 1981 and has twenty years experience in Information Technology innovation and management.  Starting in 1990, as an entrepreneur, Mr. Todd began focusing on the issue of establishing trusted business relationships on CompuServe, several years before the popularization of the Internet and e-commerce.  Prior to joining IBM, he was Executive Vice President of a publicly traded PKI technology company that pioneered a unique approach to establishing and maintaining trust in public keys.  As a Senior PKI Consultant with IBM Global Services, Mr. Todd was responsible for the business and legal consulting activities on a root certification authority PKI project that is establishing Canada’s first trusted infrastructure for electronic payments.  Mr. Todd has authored a number of documents on assessing the value of public key infrastructures for establishing trust in Internet-based transactions, and while on assignment to IBM’s Global PKI Center of Competency in the US last year, developed IBM’s Trust-enabling Solution Framework and supporting engagement methods.  He often advises executives of IBM’s clients worldwide on PKI and trust strategy and has been an advisory board member of several organizations in the US and Canada.  Mr. Todd is a frequent speaker and commentator at information technology seminars and conferences.

Most recently, Mr. Todd worked with several PKI-related technology vendors and Canadian corporate clients to architect innovative, "on demand" trust-enabling solutions that make it considerably easire for applications to access and use public key cryptographic services, as needed, in order to satisfy their regulatory requirements.

Mr. Todd led the e-Trust strategy development efforts of a multinational consumer packaged goods company that was deploying a universal framework for a trust-enabling services infrastructure to support the e-business applications of all lines of business, to be governed by a proposed, corporate-wide Trust Office.

Prior to that, Mr. Todd acted as Subject Matter Expert and Senior PKI Consultant, accountable for all business-consulting activities that included the development of the business strategy, requirements, value assessment, and governance materials on a couple of large PKI projects that included a Canadian national root PKI for electronic payments and a leading US-based financial services organization.  He was also responsible for managing the business and legal teams of external project partners.

Previously, Mr. Todd led a Canadian Financial Institution to develop a secure electronic business transactions solution and associated IT architecture.  The architecture provides the client with a scaleable and flexible solution in support of its very large and aggressively growing business partner network.  The end-to-end architecture balances security risks and requirements with business usability.   The architecture was based on a Public Key Infrastructure that was deployed on a selective basis, based on the trading partner's business requirements.

Mr. Todd has been involved in many financial institution e-commerce projects, helping to define and deploy secure business solutions.  The focus of these engagements was based on addressing privacy issues and establishing trust models.   In most cases the architectures included security policies with confidentiality, integrity, availability, non-repudiation, authentication and access control standards definitions.   Mr. Todd was also actively involved in helping an e-commerce subsidiary of a major Canadian financial institution to establish a security offering strategy in support of its business partner requirements.

Mr. Todd is a former member of the Editorial Advisory Board for CyberSecurity Advisor, an Aspen Publishing newsletter, to which he was also a regular editorial contributor on e-business security and trust issues.

Mr. Todd is also a former member of the Program Advisory Committee for the Applied Degree for Information System Security at Sheridan College, in Ontario, Canada.

Mr. Todd is a regular contributor of thought-leadership material to IBM’s Security Intellectual Capital database.  His most recent contribution was a formalized, comprehensive framework and approach for deploying trust-enabling services that support the strategic business objectives of e-business initiatives, such as e-marketplaces.

Mr. Todd's career has centered on emerging computer technology-based businesses, having held key management positions with Cebra Inc., Diversinet Corp., Lotus Development Canada, Quarterdeck Office Systems and CIT Canada, where he has repeatedly been involved with new product/market planning and launch activities. As a marketing strategist, he has sought fresh insight into uncharted technology territory to unearth exceptional market value in the areas of knowledge asset management, e-mail and messaging systems, software integration, expert systems, virtual communities, and digital certificates.

In 1993, as President and founder of Phase III Computing Inc., BYTE Magazine's Jerry Pournelle recognized his company's software product, President's Planner, for innovative leadership.

Mr. Todd is also a pioneer in electronic commerce; having used on-line services as a strategic marketing and communication tool for cultivating trusted business relationships, as early as 1990. With the subsequent popularity of the Internet, he has shared his related insight and experiences as a consultant, lecturer and writer on the subject of "Doing Business on the Internet", throughout North America.

Mr. Todd is also intimately familiar with the personal information management (PIM) software industry and the application of natural-language, expert-system user interfaces for personal productivity in general business and professional practice. His previous successes have come in the areas of premium product positioning for vertical and horizontal markets, public relations, product mix, product management, direct and channel sales, customer loyalty, technical design and implementation, and user support, at all stages of a product's lifecycle.

Mr. Todd obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto in 1981 and launched his career with Price Waterhouse. He has conducted business in Canada, the United States, the Netherlands, Sweden and Israel, and has studied French, German and Slavic languages.
