They came by ship - Assisted Immigrants who arrived 1844

HAVE YOU LOST A SIBLING? Chris WATKINS, 4 Finch Street, Burwood 3125, Victoria, Australia, who has just joined us, writes to say that most of the passenger lists for immigrant ships which came to Melbourne have survived and are held at the PRO in that city. The following is a list of Assisted Immigrants from Buckinghamshire sent to the Colony under The Regulations of Her Majesty's Colonial Land and Immigration Commissioners in the Barque Dale Park [420 tons] which sailed from Deptford on 16 March, 1844, and from Cork on 31 March, 1844 arriving at Port Phillip on 21 July, 1844. Chris' particular interest is that his g.g.grand father, Richard Watkin, and sister Emma (later Foster), were amongst the passengers. Another passenger, Isabella Davis, married Henry Greenham in Australia at the early age of 17 and their daughter, Annie, married John Watkins, a son of Richard. Chris asks what were the circumstances which forced so many people from Buckinghamshire to emigrate to Australia. A letter from such an immigrant gives an intimation as to why a new life miles from home and friends was thought worthwhile.

He came to SA 1847 on the Theresa
