Personal History: Elizabeth began life an "oops" baby, born when her older brothers were already 18 and 15. Her father died when she was just 5 years old, and her brother John became her father figure. Elizabeth left home at 18 for an eastern university, but she married during her first year. Her husband, Gerhardt von Oldenburg, was the eldest son of minor European aristocrats. He was ten years older, an executive in the family's business in Toronto. Elizabeth left school to have his children, but he became inattentive after a few years, especially when she failed to produce a son after three children. He began traveling more, and Elizabeth became an inattentive mother. She left the girls with a nanny while she returned to school full time, eventually becoming an executive at Marshall Industries (Toronto). She spent less and less time at home and one by one her daughters left Canada for European boarding schools and universities. Though she shares an equal part of Marshall Industries with her two brothers, Elizabeth has thus far allowed them more control over the day-to-day running of the company. Next to them and together with Maureen Marshall, she holds the most power.
