Altun Ha 

Altun Ha is named by a translation into Mayan of the name of the nearby village, Rockstone Pond. Located 31 miles from Belize, it is the closest major Mayan site. This site was occupied from approximately 200 B.C. until approximately 900 A.D.

Temple A-1 (right) has been called the "Green Tomb" because there were many jade objects found in the tombs in this temple.

The Temple of the Masonry Altars, also called the Temple of the Sun God (Temple B-4) in 1999 (left) and 2003 (right) after considerable archeological restoration and stabilization work had been done.  This temple was built around A.D. 600. It was in this temple that the large jade head - a sculpture of Kunich Ahau, the sun god. This beautiful scupture can be seen in the Belize Museum in Belize City.
