In 1969, Jim Huels volunteered for service in the Army. He was eventually assigned as a crew chief on a helicopter.
During his stay in Vietnam, he crashed three times, but sustained no
life threatening injuries.
When asked about his reaction to the country of Vietnam, Mr. Huels commented on how beautiful the countryside was from the vantage point of a helicopter. He also remarked about the different wild life of the country and the especially huge insects.

Looking back on the time that he spent in Vietnam, Mr. Huels said that he really missed his family and friends. He also said he missed some of the little pleasures in life like chocolate milkshakes. Jim was proud to have served his country in Vietnam in spite of the hardships and felt he was well received upon his return.
Mr. Huels also commented on how much he thinks young people today take their freedoms for granted. He pointed out that they should feel really blessed that they have not had to deal with a major war in their lifetime and he hoped they never would. He emphasized how important it is for them to take advantage of the privileges they have been given.
