that by volunteering he could avoid serving in Vietnam. There were numerous reasons why he did not want to
serve in the Vietnam War. Probably
the biggest factor was fear. He not only
feared for his own life but also for his family if something should
happen to him. He did, in fact, end up in Vietnam anyway. He served his country
with pride and did not regret the time he spent there.
One month prior to leaving, Steve was married. Spending thirteen months away from a newly formed family was not easy for husband or wife. It was very hard on his marriage. Letters and packages were sent back and forth. Timing, however, was not always the best. Junk got his Christmas packages in April, but he and the other soldiers made the best of things. One thing that helped him Click here to see a video of Steve Junk through all of this was his faith. He attended church on a regular basis which helped him deal with the separation.
While in Vietnam, Mr. Junk served in Law Enforcement He was in at least two firefights and numerous rocket attacks. During these times the soldiers grew very dependent on each other. It was important that each man know and perform his duty. If one soldier failed to perform his or her duty the lives of others were in danger. Many relationships were formed and are held to this day because of the closeness developed during the war.
When asked about the high rate of drug usage during the war, Mr. Junk replied that a lot of soldiers used drugs, but most were very careful not to use them during actual combat time.
Upon his return home, Mr. Junk felt he was received warmly. He served his country proudly and would do it again if asked.
