Welcome to this new site which is aimed at giving visitors a glimpse of what Coggeshall has to offer and hopefully will inspire them to come and visit for themselves. This site is designed by the curator of Coggeshall museum and there are links to the museum website and her other site called Coggeshall2003. There will be some overlaps in content - for instance, the Guided Walk is set up on Coggeshall2003 and clicking on the Guided Walk link will take you to that site. Please use the BACK button to return here.

WHERE IS COGGESHALL?

Coggeshall is an historic village lying mid-way between Braintree and Colchester on the River Blackwater in north-east Essex. It is steeped in history from pre-Roman to modern times and many communities worldwide have traced their ancestral roots back to this charming village. In 2003 Coggeshall became Eastern England and Home Counties Village of the Year, beating off stiff competition from other villages in East Anglia and the Home Counties. In that year it was also Essex Best Kept Village, a title it has won for several years in the recent past. This year,2008, the churchyard of the parish church of St Peter-ad-Vincula won the Best Kept Churchyard in Essex.

Coggeshall's village sign stands on the green opposite the parish church. It is made of English oak and  was erected to celebrate the millennium. The monk represents the Cistercian abbey that was once here in Coggeshall, whilst the other side bears the representation of a Coggeshall wool-merchant.

The BBC's Lovejoy series was filmed in the area, with Coggeshall being one of the regular locations so you may have had glimpses of Coggeshall already. We hope that you will come and visit to enjoy the locations in person. For those who love walking two footpath walks are included on this site and footpath maps can be obtained at the Parish Office or the museum on Sundays.
