Reference Materials

The following books will be most helpful both for teacher and student.

  • Crawford. Richard.  An Introduction to America's Music. New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 2001.
    • ISBN 0-393-97409-X.
    • Note:  The publisher also offers a companion  set of three CDs with many examples of music mentioned in the book.  The CD set carries the same name as the book.  ISBN 0-393-97410-3.
  • Alexander, J. Heywood. ed. To Stretch Our Ears:  A Documentary History of America's Music.  New York:  W. W. Norton & Company, 2002.
    • ISBN  0-393-97411-1 (pbk).

These books and others by Richard Crawford are available through Amazon.   If the teacher is considering purchasing the books as texts for the entire class, it may be possible to get a desk reference copy from the publisher, W. W. Norton, at no charge.

Hardware Needs

Ideally, each student should have access to a computer, so that the entire class can work on the WebQuest at the same time.  If school or classroom logistics make this impossible, there should be at least one computer available for each team during class time.  As a last resort, students could be encouraged to print out pertinent pages to read away from the computer terminal.  Such copies could become a part of the student's journal.

Computers will need Internet Explorer or Netscape.

Human Resources

"The Great Divide" is structured to be managed by one teacher with a single class of high school music students.   During the online research phases, it might help to enlist the expertise of a school librarian or media specialist to help students learn how to browse effectively.  To add more interest and exposure, a field trip to the birthplace or performance arena of one of the listed musicians might help.   In addition, the teacher could also add in a video or movie of a famous musician's life ("Amadeus", for example) to introduce the idea that surrounding culture, family life, and politics have strong influence on our music making and creating.
