History |
Ororo Munroe was born in New York City to David Munroe, a local photographer and his wife
N'Dare', a Kenyan princess. Although of African ancestry, she was born with such distinguishing
features as blue eyes and silky white hair that her mother named her Ororo, a name which means
simply "beauty."
When she was only six years old, David was assigned to Egypt to cover the growing tensions in
the war torn Middle East, and he brought Ororo and N'Dare' there to accompany him. On one
fateful day, Allied fighter jets in concert with those from Israel filled the skies above Egypt.
One was hit by an anti-aircraft missile, causing the fighter plane to crash into the villa where
Ororo and her family were staying. Her parents die in the tragic crash, but Ororo was buried
alive in the rubble just feet away from the body of her mother. It is this horrible event that
still manages to plague Storm with a claustrophobic fear of closed in spaces.
Orphaned and abandoned, Ororo managed to beg on the mean streets of Cairo, Egypt for a short
while. Fortunately, she encountered a band of street urchins who took her to their master
Achmed El Gibar. The elder master was an old pickpocket and escape artist who lived through
training other abandoned children in survival and the art of picking pockets. He took pity on
Ororo, and under his tutelage she became the best thief in Cairo and his favorite pupil. She
learned the skill of begging, the tools of picking pockets and locks, as well as the art of
escaping from all kinds of knots and perilous binding situations.
During this time she had a brief encounter with Professor Xavier who was vacationing in Cairo.
As fate would have it, she targeted this toursisty looking man and stole his wallet. If not for
his mutant powers, she would have no doubt have been successful. Even as a child, Xavier sensed
her mutant abilities but was preempted from investigating further due to interference from his
arch-nemesis Amahl Farouk, the Shadow King.
About six years past and Ororo felt an inner need to go south away from Egypt and the Sahara
Desert. Ororo traveled on foot for about a year covering two thousand miles and crossing the
countries of Ethiopia and Kenya. Along the way she met up with the Black Panther T'challa, the
Warrior Prince of Wakanda. The two shared a brief romance until deciding to go their separate
ways. Ororo's powers manifested at the young age of thirteen; and after making her way to the
Serengeti Plains in Tanzania, she began to feel at peace. To say the native tribes were in awe
of her weather wielding abilities is an understatement. They pronounced her a goddess, and Ororo
embraced her new role supplying rain to the lands and alleviating droughts.
The paths of Ororo and Professor Xavier would cross again when Charles was recruiting new mutant
heroes to form his second generation of X-men to replace those kidnapped by the mutant island
Krakoa. Xavier explained to Ororo that she was not a goddess but a mutant, born with great
powers and with them great responsibilities. He challenged her to serve the whole world with
these powers and become one of his X-men. Ororo accepted of course and became the X-man code
named Storm.
She became an integral part of the team and learned to hone and perfect her powers, becoming
the best friend of Jean Grey in the process. Colossus became her "little brother." Even the
often hard to deal with Wolverine became close to her, and he taught her the importance of
complimenting her mutant powers with hand-to-hand combat skills. Later Storm replaced a
grief-ridden Cyclops as the X-men's team leader, after he chose to leave the team to mourn
Jean's "death".
Although daunted with the task at first, Storm grew into the role and enjoyed
it immensely. However, as Cyclops returned and Xavier himself became more involved with
commanding the team, the chain of command became blurred. This along with the identity struggle
growing within her between serene weather goddess and hard nosed teamleader caused Ororo a fair
amount of angst.
During this period, Storm led the X-men in a mission to save Angel's life from the Morlocks.
The odds were bad, the situation was dire, the X-men were outnumbered, and Kitty's
(whom she held as close to her as a daughter) life was held in the balance. In a last ditch
effort to save the team, Storm challenged the Morlock leader Callisto to a duel to the death,
with the winner taking control of the Morlocks. Storm wins this battle, driving a knife into
Callisto's heart in the process and nearly kills her.
Again, these actions caused Ororo some confusion especially after being raised to hold life
with the utmost regard. It wasn't until an X-men adventure in Japan where she met an adventurous
girl named Yukio when she began to rectify these conflicting feelings. The two became the best
of friends as Storm became fascinated by the sheer carefree antics of Yukio. After their
encounter, Ororo took on a drastic change. She adopted a Mohawk hairstyle and a tough leather
outfit to signify that she had outgrown the pristine weather goddess persona as well as to show
to her teammates that she was secure in her role as team leader.
In a freak accident, Storm's mutant powers were stripped away by top government agent Henry
Peter Gyrich with a gun designed by the mutant "maker" Forge, who was hired by the government
to invent a weapon to strip mutants of their powers. Storm took the news of her lost
birthright hard, but she began to fall in love with Forge not knowing it was he who had
designed the weapon that had robbed her. The relationship took a turn for the worse when she
found out the truth, and Ororo left Forge.

After a brief respite in Africa, Ororo challenged Cyclops to a duel to satisfy the leadership
question once and for all. She beat Cyclops in that battle in the danger room despite not
having any powers, relying more and more on her wits and her growing stealthlike strategy. Cyclops would have won except he was being manipulated by Madelyne Pryor, who didn't want him to join the X-Men again.
Storm led the X-men effectively through many adventures, however she felt it necessary after
the Mutant Massacre that her powers be restored somehow so that she could lead the team even
better. She sought Forge's help in this matter and their relationship rekindled.
After getting her powers back, Storm took the team to Australia. The world thought the team was
dead, and she believed the X-men could better serve the Dream by striking out at their enemies
from beyond the grave and giving the team a sort of legendary status.
In Australia during a battle with Nanny, a robot with less than good intentions, Storm
was thought to be dead by her teammates and was converted to the body of a child. She reemerged
in Cairo, Illinois with little memory of who she was. She only knew that she was being hunted by
Nanny and the evil Shadow King.
While burglarizing houses and eluding her pursuers, the young Storm met up with Gambit, a
mysterious mutant thief from Louisiana. The two of them made quite a pair and overcame the
danger of Nanny. They spent some time in Louisiana until Storm's memories returned and she
brought Gambit back with her to the X-men.
In a horrifying battle with the Genoshan magistrates Storm was converted to a mutate slave.
Through the coordinated efforts of the X-men and X-Factor, the Genoshans
were defeated, and Storm emerged from the X-tinction Agenda with her mind and true age intact.
She is currently living in her attic quarters in the X-Mansion, serving as leader of the Gold Team.
