This page is for the McIntyre's in our family. I'm just now starting to track down those elusive McIntyre's but if you have info on them, please let me know. If you read something here you know is wrong, contact me! I'm getting this info from various sources, and sometimes it may not be accurate.
This page was updated June 1st with information given to me via the telephone from Phil McIntyre of Zanesville. Let's see if I get this right.
John Darby McIntyre – could be from County Down or Tyrone Ireland
Update as of 4-9-06
New information I have found through Ancestry.com. This information has NOT been proven yet. I mention in a few paragraphs to follow that JD probably came over due to the Potato Famine of 1845. So if that's true, the following information in green could not be him.
Kentucky 1910 Miracode Index Record lists John's (68) birthplace as Ireland. County: Campbell, Newport. His wife, Mary, also being from Ireland age 58. It lists a son William age 28 born in Kentucky. Enumeration District: 0024 Visit: 0160, Color: W. So I'm assuming this to mean that JD was born in 1842, Mary in 1852 and William in 1882. It does not list any other children. He should have had a son named John born in 1866. I'm sure he would have been off and married by this time.
The 1920 Census lists William (from above) who was born in 1882 as age 76. Born in KY., It says he was Single. So I'm assuming he never married. It also lists both of his parents from Ireland.
Then the Bearfield, Perry, Ohio census for 1920 states: John (JD's son) was born in 1866. So if the above information about the Kentucky Miracode of 1910 COULD be true. That would make JD 24, Mary 14 (WOW!) when John was born. This census of 1920 also states John had a middle initial of "C.", he was 54 years old, born in Kentucky, and was married to Ellen (who was 50 in 1920) and had the following children; George W., 29, Frank, 20, Charley, 18, Ralph, 15, Philip S., 13, and William, 9. It lists both of John's parents as born in Ireland. They should have also had a son named John who was married to Hazel. In this same 1920 Census it lists him as 26, married to Hazel P. (Hammers) was 22. Daughters Margaret M. was 4 and Dorothy E. was 3. Hazel was born in Illinois. John was born in Ohio and his father, John, was born in KY.
Married to a Mary, but while on the ship from Ireland, she died. He married again either on the ship or right away, to another “Mary”. Darby was probably leaving Ireland due to the Potato Famine of 1845. But what probably had him leaving Ireland was the promise of Coal Mining companies paying your way from Ireland to work for them in their coal mines which is known as an "Indentured Slave." When Darby arrived, he landed in Pennsylvania and then worked his way down to Kentucky in a place that I am told no longer exists. Hunnewell Furnace. Mary’s grave has been spotted in an abandoned and now hard to get to Cemetery. They were Catholic. In 1870 Darby’s net worth was $100.00. Darby came over with his four brothers and when they got here they split up. One brother, named John, came back in 1870 and became a teamster, where he rented wagons and horses. His net worth in 1870 was $10,000.00. Another brother went to Missouri and he started the “Reba McIntyre” line. Of course she is from Oklahoma, so somewhere down the line they moved to Oklahoma. Other brothers of Darby might possibly have been Benjamin, David and James. James may have gone to Charleston North Carolina. Some other locations were Florida, Boston Mass., and Indiana. It is said that one of Darby’s cousins was the 1st Sheriff of Morgan County and his name was Frank.
Darby was in Ky. In 1861. This was the time of Stonewall Jackson and Darby was part of it belonging to the 51st Virginia under Stonewall Jackson Foot Calvary. George Washington Watkins (Ellen’s father) appears to have fought for three years against Darby in the Civil War. Apparently, G.W. Watkins was shot three times in the leg on the battlefield and Darby pulled him out and saved his life. Watkins went to the DC Hospital and held a gun to the doctor telling him that he better not amputate his leg…or else!
G.W. Watkins was a farmer and after he was released he went and found Darby who was a Coal Miner. Watkins got him a job up towards Noble, in Gurnsey County. G.W. was so pleased that Darby saved his life that his daughter ended up marrying Darby’s son John. Now whether that was arranged, I don’t know.
DARBY & MARY McINTYRE
CHILDREN:
1. John C. b. 1866 - d. 1948
m. Ellen Watkins b. 1869- d. 12-28-1938 (date of death found 8-4-06 on Ancestry.com)
From Ancestry.com. The 1920 Census lists the household as living in Bearfield, Perry Co. In the house were: John C. (54), Ellen (50), George W. (29), Frank (20), Charley (18), Ralph (15), Philip S. (13) and William (9).
2. George
m. "Aunt" Mame
From Ancestry.com the 1910 Census for Ohio, Perry, Bearfield. George E. as Head, Male, White 47 (So this gives us a birth year of 1863-4). Then it says M2 under Marriage. I am assuming this means it's his second marriage. Says 8 years of marriage. It also says he was born in Kentucky, with both his parents being born in Ireland. He spoke English, and was a miner in a coal mine. His wife Mammie was married twice as well and was 39 years of age. Her father was born in Louisiana and her mother from Kentucky. It looks like she had one child (probably from her first marriage) and that child was not alive at that time. It lists their children (probably just George's) as Edward G. (23), Leonard J.(21), and Charles A.(19). They were all minors.
The 1920 Census for Ohio, Perry, Bearfield lists George E. as head and he is 56. Mammie (49) is still living there as well as Charles A. (29).
3. William -
I have also found a 1920 Census for Bearfield, Perry, Ohio on William. It is very badly copied and extremely hard to read. I have come to find this information out: It looks as though he was living alone. He was the "head" of the household, and he was 46 years old. That would put his YOB at 1874 and NOT 1882. IF these are the same two Williams (the same William as listed in the info about his father, JD.) It also reads: He was "S" for single and he was born in Kentucky with both parents being born in Ireland. He was a loader and a coal miner. (4-9-06) Now on the page before I look at the census record, Ancestry lists William at age 76. I don't know why they did that. They also have his year listed as abt. 1844 and then 1874! They have a little "carrot" type of character there stating that this is an alternate year for this person. They also have his name listed as William McIntyre and William Mc Intyre. But the census itself has his age at 46.
4. James
5. Phil
6. **David
7. GIRL UNKNOWN she shows in 1870 Noble Jersey County census then disappears in 1880
***In the 1910 Census I have found a man, John K McIntyre and he was 18 at the time (making him born abt. 1892); The father John C. was 67. There is a woman listed, Mary E (84). Could this be John C's mother? The dates don't really jive. Then it lists sisters as: Anna E (16) and Catherine C (12).
**Darby also had a either a cousin, or some relation or someone close to the family that died and Darby took in their son named David. He raised David in KY. David later moved to Charolette, NC where he met and married a girl whose father owned a large plantation. Either David or this father of the girl was an Agent? General for Robert E. Lee.
And of course, on a plantation, there were usually slaves. Slaves often took the last name of their plantation owners due to no one knowing what their last names were. So these slaves took on the last name of McIntyre, assumingly after David had his own plantation or took over that plantation. There was a man, a black 300 lb, 6”8 man, named Guy McIntyre who played for the San Francisco 49’ers that is to believed to have come from ‘our’ line.

8. WILLIAM McINTYRE 1910 - 1977
m. “a” Delores (from Columbus, Ohio)
*I think (William) was a quiet man and would hunt and fish.
Delores had been married before and I have several accounts as to how many and just whose children there were. I have heard she had a boy and girl before she married William. I have heard she had two girls and a boy before William. I heard she and William had none together. I heard one of her girls died very young. I’ve also heard that she has a grandson named Mark who probably lives out in Arizona now. I heard that William was building a house out in AZ, when upon finishing the roof, he had a heart attack and died.
***If anyone knows which child of William and Delores that "Mark" belonged to, please contact me as I am trying to find him out in Arizona. Was he a McIntyre by last name, or did he have another last name due to he was the daughter's child?
This list was given to me but I forget just WHICH John this represents. Was it Darby's brother? Or Jack's brother John? Or just who was it? JOHNS BROTHERS (and these are just possibles)
