Hereford Inlet
North Wildwood
Hereford Inlet Lighthouse, like Sea Girt, is constructed in the Victorian style and went into operation in 1874 in the Anglesea section
of North Wildwood on Five Mile Beach Island. Often threatened by erosion, the lighthouse was moved to its present location in 1914 and remained in
service until 1964, when it was replaced by the steel tower navigational beacon which can be seen to the right of the lighthouse in the picture on the
right. The lighthouse is also noted for its garden, which can be seen in the foreground of the left-hand picture.

Situated at the southern tip of New Jersey, Cape May Lighthouse, the third light on this site, went into operation in 1859 and continues
to guide ships in Delaware Bay to this day. Like Barnegat and Absecon, construction was supervised by Lieut. George Gordon Meade (who must have gained
an intimate knowledge of the New Jersey shore). The photo at the top right shows the beach at Cape May Point State Park with the city of Cape May in
the distance. The next two photos show the borough of Cape May Point looking north and a view of the lighthouse from the beach. In the third row of
photos, we see another northward view toward Sunset Beach. In the water of Delaware Bay just off the beach (above the house with the tan roof and round
window) what looks like a rock is actually the remains of a concrete ship (stop laughing!), built during World War I, but never used because of its slow
speed. The photo at the right, taken during a 1988 trip, shows a closeup of the ship, the Atlantis. After the war, two of the concrete ships were salvaged
and towed to this location to serve as piers for a proposed ferry to Delaware. The enterprise never came to fruition and during a 1926 storm, one ship was
driven aground and broke up. The bottom photo, also taken in 1988, shows sunset over Delaware Bay. I walked out onto a jetty to take the picture and had
to be very careful returning as the surface was uneven and the light reduced. At Cape May Point, it is possible to see the sun rise over the Atlantic and
set over Delaware Bay.
