Tucker's Island
Tuckerton
The Tucker's Island Lighthouse is a replica of the beacon that stood on now-vanished Tucker's Island in Little Egg Harbor. The original
lighthouse, built in 1868, warned sailors away from what was one of New Jersey's first shore resorts, but eventually succumbed, as did the entire island,
to the ravages of storm and surf. Several dramatic photos inside the replica show the lighthouse, badly undermined by erosion, collapsing into the bay
during a severe 1927 storm. On the right is a view from the top of the lighthouse of Tuckerton Creek, with the buildings of the Tuckerton Seaport complex
on the right.
Absecon
Atlantic City
Constructed in 1855-1856 under the direction of Lieut. (later General) George G. Meade, Absecon (Ab-SEE-kun) Lighthouse stands at the
northern end of Absecon Island (Atlantic City) and threw its light out over the Atlantic Ocean until 1933. The tallest lighthouse in New Jersey
(although there is a longstanding dispute of the matter with
Barnegat), Absecon is the third tallest in country. Due to the filling in of land north and east of the lighthouse, it now stands several blocks from
the shore and is dwarfed by the gambling palaces that begin a short distance away. The top right photo shows the rebuilt lightkeeper's house; the
original had been under restoration when destroyed by fire in 1998. The two bottom photos show the contrasts of the Atlantic City of today, the casinos
on the left and the empty blocks of desolation in the Inlet neighborhood on the right. The city is attempting to rebuild the area with new housing and
attractions such as the Ocean Life Center.
