East Point
Heislerville
Situated on the Maurice (MOR-ris) River Cove, an arm of Delaware Bay, in Cumberland County, East Point Lighthouse is the second oldest
lighthouse still
standing in New Jersey. Beginning in 1971, the lighthouse has been undergoing a slow but steady restoration. Only five people at a time are allowed
into the lantern room, since in order to put stairs in, half the floorspace in the room had to be sacrificed. When the light was oil-fired, the keeper had
to climb a ladder, open a trap door, put the oil bucket on the lantern room floor, then boost himself up. The photo at the bottom left looks southeast
down Delaware Bay; that on the right looks north toward the mouth of the Maurice River.
Finns Point Rear Range
Pennsville
Range lights were used along the Delaware River (as well as others) as a means of navigation. They were set up in pairs and the ship's
captain would gauge the position of the river channel by keeping the ship aligned with the pair of lights. Deepening of the Delaware River channel
in 1950 rendered the Finns Point light obsolete and it was taken out of commission. The lighthouse was closed to climbers, so I was unable to get any
panoramic views.
