Tinicum Rear Range
Paulsboro
The end of the trail. Like Finns Point, Tinicum is one of what was once a pair of range lights. Situated rather incongruously in the
middle of a sports complex in a working-class neighborhood of Paulsboro, Tinicum overlooks the Delaware River several miles south of Camden. The lighthouse
is not as tall as some of the others in the state, but the doorway leading from the lantern room to the deck is only about five feet high and requires
some contortion (I stand 6'4" and at 57 am not as limber as I used to be) to pass through. The photo at the right looks north across the Delaware
River, with the Philadelphia skyline in the distance.
The New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge is a wonderful experience (especially if the weather is good). The Society members and lighthouse guides are friendly
and informative and the views from the tall lighthouses are spectacular. If you can manage to get away the second weekend in October, you will not be
disappointed in this expedition.
