Myths About Getting Pregnant
You can't get pregnant
the first time you have sex.
Not true. You can get pregnant the very first time or any time
after.
You can't get pregnant
if you have a bath or shower afterwards.
Not true. You can get pregnant regardless of taking a bath, shower
or douching. Sperm are fast little swimmers.
You can't get pregnant
while you're on your period.
Not true. Although not as common, sometimes a woman can ovulate and
have a period at the same time or ovulate soon after her period (sperm
are good for 3 to 5 days).
You can't get pregnant
if you have sex standing up.
Not true. Again, sperm are fast little swimmers and they're very
determined. You can get pregnant regardless of the angle of intercourse.
You can't get pregnant
if the man's penis doesn't fully enter the vagina.
Not true. It doesn't matter if he doesn't go in all the way, you can
still get pregnant.
You can't get pregnant
if the man withdraws before ejaculating (cumming).
Not true. The little clear fluid that comes from a man's penis when
he is aroused but before he ejaculates can contain sperm. While not as
common, you can still get pregnant even if he doesn't ejaculate inside
the vagina if you've had intercourse. In fact, just ejaculating close to
the opening of the vagina can result in pregnancy.
A man can't stop
himself once he starts.
Not true. Further more, any man who says this is not worth your
time. It is selfish for him to claim this because it is not true and is
a way to manipulate a woman into having sex with him. At any time you
say no, he can stop. It will not hurt him. He will not turn green and
blow up. He may be a little frustrated but he will live. That is what
cold showers are for. ;)
You can't get pregnant
if you use a condom.
Not true. It reduces the risk of pregnancy. If you're going to have
sex and don't want to have a baby yet, then by all means use a condom as
it makes it less likely that you will get pregnant. But don't think you
aren't at risk. Condoms break, and some have naturally occurring holes
in them, so even with perfect use there is a failure rate. Before you
have sex, you and your partner need to be fully aware of the risks and
the choice you are making and you should both be ready and able to deal
with the possible consequences, in pregnancy.
