Day Three

John P. McGovern Museum of Health and Medical Science

Day Three started off at the MHMS with a presentation and Powerpoint slide show by Dr. Merill Overturf. His presentation on cardiovascular diseases included a review of heart anatomy from the dissections on Day Two, plus a discussion that defined cardiovascular disease, genetic and environmental causes, symptoms, and treatments. As part of the treatment options discussed by Dr. Overturf, participants got to handle and operate a balloon angioplasty device. Dr. Overturf handed out material from Frontiers in Physiology: The Cardiovascular System, which included classroom labs and materials for teaching the topic.

The afternoon started with Dr. Liliana Rodriguez presenting Microbes in the Classroom, her presentation on microbiology, its history, current techniques, and examples of microbes commonly found in nature and in medical exams.

She also handed out packets stuffed with useful information, websites, and classroom lab exercises. Participants divided into three groups and performed some of these labs (see pictures below, and more on the Microbe Lab Activities photo gallery). After the labs, the participants presented their labs and findings to the rest of the group. Dr. Rodriguez ended with discussions of the websites and some useful books and materials she had provided.
