Wild Irish Rose Farm

Although Wild Irish Rose Farm has been in existence for many years, it has only been in the last half dozen years or so that it has made itself known to outsiders. At one time, Wild Irish Rose Farm was a part of PineWind Farm, and to this day is still very closely related. Most of the dams shown on this website have all been owned by PineWind Farm at one time or another, while many have been purchased by family members or friends.

PineWind Farm is a small family owned and operated horse-related business. It has been in existence since 1978 when the family moved to their present location in Ledyard, Connecticut. In the beginning the main emphasis was on raising and breeding foundation bred Appaloosas. Several well bred mares formed the basis of this early breeding program.

In the early years, PineWind Farm was also instrumental in making the general public aware of the wild horses (mustangs) available from the Bureau of Land Management's Adopt-A-Horse Program. Over the years PineWind Farm helped to find homes for many mustangs fresh off the range. All but one or two of the dozens adopted in the southern New England area, were able to become a trusted and valued mount for their owners.

In the very late 1980's and into the early 1990's, PineWind Farm began to change their color breeding program from Appaloosas to Paints and Pintos. The change was slow but steady and it was during this time that Wild Irish Rose Farm started to play a bigger part in the breeding program. Wild Irish Rose Farm's original primary role was one of research, particularly in the area of pedigrees and what bloodlines had the prepotency for color. This original role has continued and grown to include providing pedigree information to outsiders.

In early 1995, Wild Irish Rose Farm bought their first stallion, a three year old Paint/Pinto liver chestnut tobiano, J Bar Jingos Jewel. Jewel was bred and raised in Missouri and was gentle enough, as well as had an excellent temperament and wonderful disposition, to be handled by women and children. Even though his owner didn't show him, Jewel was a valued asset to our breeding program. These traits continued throughout his short life and were passed onto his limited foal crop.

Several months later, Wild Irish Rose Farm purchased another stallion, Checkers of Misty Meadows. Checkers was a two year old black pinto miniature with the tobiano pattern. He was shown on the Pinto circuit and had already earned one Register of Merit (ROM) for the tobiano color. Checkers accumulated Pinto show points in halter and trail. As a three year old, he received his second ROM, this one for halter. Checkers has been retired temporarily from showing and is concentrating on his harem. To date, his limited number of foals have all been fillies.

Over the next couple years, Wild Irish Rose Farm added to their small broodmare band, intimately known as the "elite few". These mares include: a bay tobiano-overo Paint/Pinto, Q Ton Jane; a sorrel tobiano-overo Paint/Pinto, BrightMoon Kachina; and a dark bay solid miniature, Pineys Blue Moon. Five foals have been bred and raised by Wild Irish Rose Farm, three Paint/Pinto, WIR Our Hearts Desire (1998), WIR Our Cinco de Mayo (1999), and WIR Our Lucky Shamrock (2001); and two miniature, WIR Check Her Misty Moon (1999) and WIR Check Her Itty Bitty Moon (2000).

In the end of 1999, Wild Irish Rose Farm finally purchased a house with some land in Griswold, Connecticut, although the land definitely needs to be cleared. Wild Irish Rose Farm is busily trying to turn their property into the proper setting for a small breeding facility. The going is slow, mostly due to lack of time (and money), but it will be accomplished some day. In the meantime, the miniatures are with us in Griswold and the big horses are residing on PineWind Farm, where they have been all of their lives or at least since Wild Irish Rose Farm has owned them.

Thank you for your interest in how we came to be! If you are interested in contacting PineWind Farm, just let me know.
