07/12/03 Wallasey Royal 5 - 7 Wirral Nomads

Team: Grant; Rob Chalmers (Iain Havard), Al Maher, Did Maher, Mark Hamlet; Paul Hurst, Tommy Amis, Matt Lammin (Gary Pike), Barry Johnson (Tim Roberts); Pedro Barroca, Dave Lucas

AN excellent display of finishing from Matt Lammin saw Wirral Nomads triumph in a 12-goal cup thriller at Arrowe Park.

With numbers short, Grant was forced to play in goal but was merely a spectator for the first fifteen minutes as Nomads raced into a two goal lead.

In the opening 10 seconds, Pedro Barroca beat the Wallasey Royal offside trap and shot low past the advancing keeper into the bottom right corner.

Minutes later Barroca put the ball into the net after a square ball from Lammin but had his effort controversially ruled out for offside.

On 15 minutes Nomads scored their second. Another move down the left wing saw Lammin break free and beat the keeper with his right foot.

But Royal refused to concede defeat and took advantage of some poor Nomads defending to take a 3-2 lead, only to see Lammin equalise on the stroke of half-time. Nomads regained the lead shortly into the second period, with Barroca on target again after good work from Paul Hurst and Tommy Amis.

Royal's fighting spirit kept them in the game and two further goals saw them take a 5-4 lead mid-way through the half.

The opportunity to play in the third round clearly appealed to Nomads, who drew level once again when Dave Lucas scored from close range.

With Royal tiring, Nomads began to take control, and Lammin completed his hat-trick on 70 minutes after running on to Amis' through ball.

Lammin soon grabbed his fourth - a left foot shot from 12-yards that curled past the goalkeeper - to seal the tie for Nomads.

With time running out, the impressive Mark Hamlet made a late bid to be the next challenger for Audley Harrison, allegedly catching his marker with a right hook and wrestling him to the ground.

Despite lenghty protests Hamlet remained on the field to help Nomads to victory and one step nearer to glory.
