St-Patrick's Academy Old Boys Association Inc.
Dear Fellow Members:
We were finally able to hold our Annual General Meeting on February 23, 2000 after two or three postponements because of bad weather. As you may know a few of our directors live in and around Montreal and our Annual Meeting date coincided with the heavy winter snow storms. At any rate the meeting was held at the date of our regular February meeting and the two were combined. This meeting was well attended and went smoothly. The President's Report was read by yours truly and consisted of a recap of the year's activities and events and ended with a reminder that he has been president for the past 7 years and hoped to be replaced some time soon. Also thanks were extended to the members of the executive for their support during the year and to all members both old and new for their contributions, be they no more than a kind thought or an occasional prayer. Secretary Treasurer John Hayes was away on holidays and submitted his annual financial statement by proxy a copy of which appears on the reverse of this bulletin. As you may observe we finished up the year with a surplus of $8386.41 of which $5000 came from the estate of the late Donald Power. Last year we had a deficit of over $3000. The increase in revenues for 1999 came from a $500 increase in donations from members, a $1000 increase in rental income, a $500 increase in interest on long term deposits (Life Membership fund) and the sale of wood and gravel ± $4000. The Camp Manager's Report by Albert Kinkead reveals that although much was done in the way of repairs to the buildings and roads, much remains to be done. Several buildings need new roofs and some roads need work. Finally, elections were held under the chairmanship of Past President Solo Parker with the result that all the incumbents were re-elected! So the Executive for the year 2000 is as follows: President John Murray, Past President Solo Parker, First Vice-President and Secretary Treasurer John Hayes, Second Vice-President and Property Advisor Gerry Largy, Recording Secretary Len Giroux, Camp Manager Albert Kinkead, Sargent at Arms Armand Boilard, Directors Harry Blue, Bill Power, Ken Power, Albert Kinkead and Pierre Boucher, Patron Brother Francis Giroux, Chaplain Rev. Pierre Doyon, Honorary President Henry Crochetière.
The regular February meeting continued with the reading of the previous minutes by Len Giroux followed by business arising which consisted of reports on the request for an evaluation of the property which place this in the neighbourhood of $250,000 while the Municipal evaluation is somewhat less. Five hectares around the lake are zoned white (meaning they could be sold) while the rest approximately eighty seven hectares are zoned green (agricultural, not to be divided). We received a letter from the Municipality of Stoke asking to meet with us to discuss the acquisition of our Stoke Lake property. While the members have expressed much interest in dealing with Stoke on a priority basis, they first wish to establish a true market value. In any case there will be much more discussion and consultation and no steps in this direction will be taken any time soon except to continue gathering information as to property value and replying to The Municipality of Stoke that they will be kept informed. In the meantime it will be business as usual. Albert Kinkead reports that the Municipality of Stoke will again rent the lakeside playground this Summer 4 days a week for the local children.
The Christmas Party was well attended and a very good dinner was served by caterers under the watchful eye of Gerry Largy. Thanks Gerry. In a sadder vein we learn today of the death of a former teacher at St-Patrick's, John Branswell. John leaves to mourn, his wife Margaret (Steele) and six children. He was related to Austin Workman, an Old Boy remembered by graduates of the 1920's and 30's. Our condolences to the family and friends. Please remember there will be a mass at St-Patrick's for the deceased members of the Old Boys on March 17. The next regular meeting of the association will be held at the Elk's Club on Montreal Street on the usual last Wednesday of the month which will be March 29th. The April and May meetings will also be at the Elk's Club. As you can see from the enclosure it is time to pay yearly dues and make a donation. Please be generous and a happy St-Patrick's day to all.
John Murray, President
