Writing TAGS is a structured system
of assigning a formula to traditional writing. It is a
way of "tagging" each kind of sentence (topic sentence,
detail sentence, support sentence, etc...) with a number
and a color so that students can learn a systematic way
of writing.
Basic TAG
Vocabulary
TAG 1 = Main idea
or topic sentence
TAG 2 = Major
detail sentence
(explains or
supports the TAG 1 sentence)
TAG 3 = Minor
detail sentence
(explains or
supports the TAG 2 sentence)
TAG C = Commentary
sentence
(a personal
comment or opinion about a TAG 2 or 3 sentence)
A concluding sentence is also
called a TAG 1. Because the conclusion often restates the
topic and summarizes the paragraph, it is called a TAG 1
also.
