Sample Project #1

Women's Studies Solution Project

Scholarship Opportunity for Female athletes at Roosevelt High School, Wyandotte MI

Obstacle
In Wyandotte, athletic booster groups provide financial, equipment and other support to the school districts athletic program, in some cases helping both males and females. One major booster group (RHS Alumni Football Club) awards athletic scholarships, focusing that support to the football program. This hardworking booster group has cumulatively given over $100,000 of scholarships to graduate (mostly male) athletes. Approximately 15 scholarships of $12,000 total was given in 1999. The school district encourages this, but does not require the athletic boosters to provide comparable scholarship support to female athletes.

Why is this important to Women?
Everyone deserves a fair opportunity to achieve to his or her maximum potential. The female athletes at this high school are not receiving the scholarship because they are not on the football team, a male sport in which females do not participate. As a result, the female athletes are not given an equal opportunity to fund their college education. It is not right to be denied an opportunity because of your sex.

1. The Women's Sports Foundation
          http://www.womenssportsfoundation.org

This web site provided information about how we could take action to provide the equal opportunity for the female athletes. We benefited from this site with the idea to contact our congress and also get help from the media to spread the word. We were able to get feedback on our ideas in the discussions boards and email center.

Solution
The Wyandotte Female Athlete scholarship foundation was founded in the year 2000 to develop a scholarship fund to be awarded to graduating female athletes from the high school. It's goal is to award two $500 scholarships each year and help continue to support the athletes with a mentor program to help them with their career goals. The foundation has raised enough to fund the scholarships for the next four years, and has hopes to create more scholarships to help give more students the opportunity they deserve.
