Emmick Family History by Maude Emmick History
"Grand Dad, with his sisters Rachael and Catherine, and his brothers, Samuel and Big John farmed the subsistence land. "
and continues:
Henry attended an academy..."so when Grand Dad (Henry) returned home he was so popular that he chose a wife from a fine English family named Nichols. "
and continues:
"...during the war (Civil War 1861-1865) that part of the state applied for admission to the Union as a separate state. Grand Dad's (Henry) sympathies were with the South, but he tried to stay out of the war. However, the new state organized vigilante committees, --"Home Guards" as they were called. They challenged every able-bodied man to join the armed forces, or else. There were threats and some violence. Grand Dad (Henry) sold his farm and moved, with his family to Southern Indiana. Their farm was on the banks of the Ohio River, near a little town called Grandview, about 100 miles west of Evansville. The little quiet cove in the river there is still called Emmick's landing."
and continues
"Soon Grand Dad (Henry) was drafted into the Union Army! There was nothing for him to do but obey orders and keep his mouth shut. However, his loyalties were suspect, so he was not assigned to the fighting forces, but drove a mule team in the wagon train that hauled supplies for the army. Such trips took him all through Kentucky and Tennessee. Dad (Jacob)who was 14, and the oldest of the family was left at home to take the place of the man of the house. But he was determined to go to war, so he slipped away and joined his father."

"Besides Dad there were his brothers Samuel, Marshall (James), Ruben, William and George. There were three sisters, Mary, Carrie and Martha,--lets see, that was nine children.(1860-1870) There were relatives who had moved to Indiana before Grand Dad (Henry). They spelled the name Emmick. They persuaded Grand Dad (Henry) that Emmick (does she mean Amick) was a Dutch corruption of the name, which had taken place during their sojourn in Germantown. They claimed that we were not Dutch but German from Frankfurt, Germany. "
and continues:
"Uncle Will died of what might have been black malaria. Their mother (Jane Nichols) began to droop around and finally died while the younger children were still small...)" --about 1870s
and continues:
"Then Dad (Jacob) decided that farming was not for him, so he went to Evansville, where he took a business course, with the idea of buying and selling farrm produce equipment. But in the mean time the family (Henry and Family) moved to Iowa, and Dad was persuaded to go along to help them get settled. He found it hard to break away, so even when he married he took Mother (Emma) to the farm in Iowa." about 1883
and continues:
about 1910 "87 yr. old Grand Dad was making his home with Aunt Carrie (and uncle John Lee) Aunt Carrie was his favorite daughter. "
"Dad's (Jacob's) sister Mary married Charlie Sluyter. They owned a lot of rich land and a lot of stock. Their home was near Salix, Iowa. They had two children, Willie and Ruth. I have already told you about Aunt Carrie and Uncle John Lee. They got to be quite wealthy. Their three sons were Willoughby, Harry and Claude,--fine boys. Harry got to be a prominent doctor in Detroit. Aunt Martha married into the Currier family, strict, stuffy, thrifty New Englanders. They owned a lot of rich land, had fine homes, owned the bank, the coal yard and the lumber yard, and other business property in town. Uncle Ethan was a pillar of the church, and a highly respected citizen. They had five children, who lived in Oakland, Calif. the last I heard. Uncle Marshall moved to Fresno, Calif. He had two or three children. I never saw any of them. Uncle Ruben moved to Santa Anna, Calif. I saw him just once. He had two or three children. Uncle George, the youngest member of the family, was considered a nare-do-well, but as far as I know he never did anything bad. He had a large family, all of whom turned out very well, much to the surprise of the rest of the family. Uncle Samuel became mentally ill so had to be sent to an institution. I never saw him. "

Sarah Jane per Norman

Link to William is conjecture at this time:
Circumstantial evidence:
accounts for Jane Nichols
accounts for lack of family information,
Accounts for Nichols mill in Nicholas County,
Road building
Sworn statement - Jacob born in Clay county
Family names carried on - William, James, Rueben, Caroline, George from Nichols
How Henry and Jane met - families connected thru road building,
family connections back to Pendleton (if not Bucks)
Nichols / Propst / Amick family relationships
lived next to Boggs (step-mother Elizabeth Boggs) in Wirt County
helps explain move by Henry and Jane from Runa to Wirt County
Jane and Sarah Jane approximately same age
first name similar and explanable difference

note Jane's mother dies when about 9 years old, father remarries. 2nd mother - step-mother - who raised her dies, father remarries 1868...

Only reference in Aunt Maude Emmick Family History is "fine English Family"; and this family is German.

Jacob Amick and Rachel Shroyer
A Pioneer Family

Jacob Amick was born in PA shortly before 1790. His father was Henry Amick (Emich). Henry brought his family to Pendleton Co. between 1790 (when he was listed on PA census) and 1794 when he appeared on the muster rolls for the Pendleton county Militia. This family has been in what is now West Virginia for nearly 200 hundred years. Henry died in 1830 and is buried on the homeplace near Franklin . He was the father of 10 children. JACOB, John Miller, Henry Jr., Mary, Reuben, Elias, Barbara, Elizabeth, Christina, and Catherine.

One of his 10 children, Jacob, married Rachel Shroyer on June 5, 1814, and moved to Nicholas County. He was one of the first Amicks to appear on the Nicholas County tax books. A surveyor's map dated 1822 shows few settlements of any size in the county at that time. Jacobs move was made possible by land grants made to families promising to settle the wilderness. Jacob is buried in an unmarked grave on Anglin's Creek in Runa, where he and his brother John Miller Amick built a sawmill and grist mill. Rachel lived to be over 100 years old. It is not known where she is buried. Jacob and Rachel had nine children. John married Mary_____? Samuel married Mary Copenhaver, One of their sons Jacob Jr. married Henrietta Boley. They had eleven children and are buried in Pleasant Hill CEM. Their fifth child Henry Amick married Jane___? Arthur, b. 03-03-1833 marr. Sarah Jane Lloyd, moved to Indiana., Elizabeth or Betsy married _____? Peck, Catherine marr. ______? Bays, Mary or Polly married William Pitsenbarger, and Rachel lived out her life on Anglins Creek.

Three of Jacobs sisters moved to the area after marrying in Pendleton county. Mary (married Christian Propst), Elizabeth (married Peter Pitsenbarger) and Barbara (married Henry Eye). John Miller Amick and his wife Catherine (Bowers) also moved to Nicholas County.
