Employment by gender

There is an average proportion of male and female veterinarians, compared to the average for all occupations. However, women's representation in this occupation increased in the early 1980s and by 1986 it had reached 30%. Although it was slightly lower in 1991, when women accounted for 25% of this group, by 1995 women represented 37% of the practising profession. By 2001, their share has risen to 49%. In veterinary schools, women account for up to 70% of enrolment.

About one-quarter of veterinarians are younger than 35, compared to the all-occupation average of 35%. Also, one-fifth of them are 55 or older, which is similar to the all-occupation average of 22%.
