Long-term factors

Positive, long-term factors affecting employment growth for this occupation include a greater awareness on the part of pet owners of the availability of advanced care, technological and medical advancements that offer better care to animals, and the general trend of pet owners to spend more on animal care. The scope of the veterinary profession has expanded beyond the care of sick animals. These days, a large part of the care provided by veterinarians focuses on the prevention of disease rather than the treatment of sick animals. Veterinarians are also an important part of our public health system. They provide expertise in the area of outbreak identification and control. Recent examples include West Nile virus and avian flu. They also help to ensure food safety for humans during food production from animal sources.

New graduates willing to handle large animals or willing to work in rural and isolated areas will have a better chance of finding employment, as there will continue to be an emphasis on scientific methods of breeding and raising livestock and poultry.

A small number of veterinarians work for government in public health and disease control research. The duties of veterinarians who perform research are similar to those of some biologists, and new graduates from veterinary programs may consider research as an alternative career path.
