Notes:
Remember the "duck and cover" drills in the 1950's?
If you do, then you're older than I am ;-) Supposedly, the Conelrad plan, which called for radio stations to leave the air "in case of attack" and then return to broadcast emergency information on 640 or 1240 kilocycles, would make the Soviets direction finding equipment useless. With all radio stations broadcasting on either 640 or 1240 during an enemy attack, it was hoped that the Russian bombers would have a difficult time finding specific cities or landmarks with their direction finding equipment. Conelrad later evolved into the Emergency Broadcast System/Emergency Alert System. |
