What is special about the Malinois?—
|
1) It is a very level headed dog. Good Malinois will not loose self
control, due to fear or anger, beyond the point where they will obey
their owners commands. They are suited to a family -as long as at
least one adult is a responsible dog owner.
2) They have ”high drive”- this means that they are very active, and
always keen to work or play. They will investigate anything unusual.
If you are doing security work with a Malinois they will work longer
than you want to. If you have one as a house dog- it is on duty 24
hours a day. If you want the dog to “Stand Down” (Because you are
having a party, or your children want to play a ball game without
the dog) I recommend constructing a dog run (I will advise on this).
A run is best for the dog too.
3) They are very athletic, enjoying running and jumping.
4) They enjoy human company.
These characteristics mean that they are suited to any responsible
dog owner, that wants the company of a capable trainable dog, and
has an enclosed garden for the dog to run in.
Shown below are two Malinois. The one with the ball in front of her
nose would love to bite it, but has been taught to obey my command
to sit motionless until I give permission to bite the ball (or give
another command). The one bitting is a young dog under training. It
is as much under control as the dog with the ball, and can be commanded
to let go and lie down (at this stage of training the dog is playing
a game with the trainer (me).
A Malinois will only behave as the dogs in the pictures, if they are
trained to behave in these ways. The behaviour is not inherited –
but the trainability is. (Don't be put off by the biting, the dogs
only do this if they are taught and commanded to.) |
