2000 Fall MTB Series
2000 Fall Series SingleSpeed Division Results - "official" results will be posted on the Chinook website. I'm just tracking the results for my own enjoyment.
Oct 8: Three intrepid riders joined up with the rest of the Sport class to battle the rocks & dust at Finley Hills. Dave Dixon came in first followed by newcomer Tim Renz on a fully rigid Specialized SS. I brought up the rear of the whole race ... (I was the second to last person to finish. Still don't know how that other person got behind me). I effectively had three flats and it took me a long time to put my two laps in. A good turnout and warm sunny weather made for some great racing.
Oct 22: Once again ... except with no moondust this time. Three SS riders had some awesome conditions to ride in. We had a hard rain the night before the race and all the trails were in excellent shape. Once again, Dave Dixon finished first although Phil Champoux was in front of Dave until multiple flats forced him to DNF. I know we've got a lot of tackweeds around here but I've never seen so many people stopped and changing tubes during a race. I was able to stay away from the flats -- good thing too since my spare tube 'fell out' near where Phil was stopped -- and finished much better this time.
Nov 5: YAHOOTY! A tough, 8 mile course greeted the four singlespeeders today. Last year's division champ, Derk Thomson crawled off his deathbed to race with the rest of the SS irregulars. Not to be outshone today, Phil "King Manomano" Champoux took a stylin' first place finish in his retro lookin' Kona jersey, followed in short order by Dave Dixon and Derk. I managed to finish strong, although the many climbs worked me over. SS racing tip of the day ... don't stall out early in the race, otherwise you'll have to stand there and watch the entire field ride by you before you can make it back on your bike. :o)
Nov 19: Cool weather didn't deter us from racing just before the Thanksgiving holidays. We'll call it training for the upcoming feast. Same course as last time, only I didn't stall out early on. Instead, I never saw one other singlespeeder after the start of the race. Dave Dixon took back his Olympia St crown from Phil Champoux. Rich Hallen worked hard for a third place finish followed by myself and then Gavin Spomer on his trick new set of Mrazek rigid Ti forks. Gavin let me take a little test ride and they really do soak up the trail vibrations.
Dec 3: In what turned out to be the last race of the series, Phil Champoux rocketed to the front of the LeMans style start and was never seen again ... until he crossed the finish line in first place. Dave Dixon followed in second with Rich Hallen and myself finishing out the order. I was in a pack of four riders and was trying to set myself up for a sprint finish. About 1/2 mile from the finish, one of the pack put a stick through his front wheel and augered in face first. Needless to say, that screwed up my strategy. Had a ton 'o fun on the tight and twisty course down at Chamna.
Dec 17: Race cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. I was driving over to my new job in Bellevue that day and I think the wind was blowing about 25mph with gusts even higher.
