Tanagers are insect and fruit eaters. They range from 6 to 7 inches long, and are brilliantly colored reds, crimsons, or have yellow and red feathers. They are common visitors to wooded areas in North America in spring and summer.
Tanagers
really enjoy fruit. Tanagers are especially fond of grapes and cherries,
so you can either offer the them via a tray feeder, or you can plant
grape vines or cherry trees to attract tanagers. Other
fruiting plants that tanagers favor the fruit of are mulberry, serviceberry,
Virginia Creeper, and dogwoods.
At the feeder, you can also offer bread and doughnuts, mealworms, the peanut butter/cornmeal mixture, or chopped bananas to tempt tanagers to your yard.
Tanagers also are attracted by the sound of water. You can
drape a hose over a branch and create a slow drip into a bird bath to get
their attention.
