Bud and Vicki Hogan's 1996 Appalachian Trail Journey

June 18
Jerry Cabin Shelter to Hogback Ridge Shelter............................................15 miles

We feel good about our mileage. Walked most of the morning on a dirt road, gentle slope, saw the civil war graves. Had lunch nearby . Someone had been here recently and trashed the place, garbage all over. This is disgusting. What pigs did this? We pack out everything that we pack in. We even refuse to burn anything in a campfire unless it is 100% paper and will burn into pure ashes, no other residue is allowed. Why are there so many jerks in the world, with so little respect for themselves or for others?

Crossed the road, looked for water. The data book said a water supply was at the road. We couldn't find it. There was supposed to be some kind of store nearby, so we decided to go there. It was closed. Trailer house across the highway with a water hose out front. I knocked on the door and asked if we could fill our water bottles here. She said that this water was not for drinking, but we could fill up at the spigot by the store under the tree. O.K. I hoped everyone else found the water supply, because there isn't another for a while.

Arrived at Hogback Ridge Shelter, nice open view of the forest in front of the shelter. The water supply is a long walk, but it is a fairly gentle walk. The privy even had a view. We had the shelter to ourselves again and just slept in the shelter, no tent.
